Default Anyone replace just their exhaust muffler?

Has anyone done this? Any power gains?

I'm thinking about just picking up a muffler from jegs or something and replacing that huge canister in the back. I was told by my local jeep shop that it's pointless to do exhaust because it's almost worth nothing, so I'm not going to do an expensive system. I'm not looking for something loud, just shiny sense the canistor is pretty much on display to the world since the lift, and possibly make this pig a little faster. Opinions welcome.

Take off your muffler and people will definitely hear you, but there won't be any visible exhaust. I'm not sure but iv heard the loss of back pressure sacrifices some of your power.

I went with a magnaflow muffler installed between the frame so there isn't anything sticking out the back of my rig. When I drop off rocks now I don't mash the muffler either. Sound was a little louder, but I believe it was part of the solution that improved my mileage. Muffler + K&N filter + Programmer chip = gas mileage from 9.9 to 13.3, and 15.0 on the hwy.

I took my jeep to a local shop and had them cut out that huge can and put in a flowmaster 40 series. They also bent and cut a exhaust tip so you can hardly see it. It sounds a ton better and it was cheap.

I went with a Corsa db dual outlet muffler. Muffler is smaller than original with a little louder sound. My JK is still pretty much stock with : CAI, throttle body spacer, DUI Livewires/coil pac, dual outlet muffler.
Getting 19 mpg combined city/highway with much better performance.

What details did your local Jeep shop give you? I've been eyeing a few new exhausts but not if it's not going to make a difference.

They just said it would be pointless unless you supercharged or turboed it. I'm not going to invest anything over 100.00 in this so not much risk there.

I think I might be doing a Dynomax exhaust as they're on sale.
I got a AEM filter and jsut got a Flashpaq so we'll see how it all works together.

Then come the gears...
