Default FINALLY buying rims and tires..need help before i buy

Ok, for my birthday the missus handed me a Discount Tire Direct credit card and said have at it! Soooo....i need some help before i buy.

Background info first..I own a 2007 Sahara Unlimited with 4:10's and factory 18"s. It is primarily a DD and will not be an offroad vehicle very much at all except for the once in a while light trail trip. As a family we also tend to take the jeep everywhere we go including long vacation drives so it needs to retain its factory ride as close as possible and keep the "awesome" gas mileage as best as i can.

As far as the rims/tires are concerned i want to have a nice aggressive stance and i dont mind having to purchase Spacers and if need be a Levelling kit and yet have the ability to enjoy a nice offroad outing while keeping the DD feel.

The rims i have picked are below..just on the fence as to which offset to get...Im going to stay with 18"s unless there is a benefit to drop down to a 17".

MB Wheels Gunner 5 Chrome - 18X8.5 5-127 25C
MB Wheels Gunner 5 Chrome - 18X8.5 5-127 -6C

When it comes to tires that has really become the hardest part for me...I have read thread after thread, review after review and still really having a hard time deciding on a tire and a tire size. I have NO idea what size tire to go with and no idea what model tire to go with either. I have picked the tires i like based on reviews below, but again not sure what size to go with.

Im currently running Firestone Destination A/T at stock 18" size.

Hankook DynaPro ATM RF10
Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 2
Falken Rocky Mountain ATS
Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac
Nitto Terra Grappler AT

So those are the tires i have read about etc...I am leaning towards the Falkens and the Hankooks.

I could really use some help picking out a tire and which tire size i should go with..

If you stay in the 32" range, you can get by with no lift & it won't appear too squatted. I went with 33's and wound up putting in a budget boost. I'm happy with it, as most of my miles are on-road too. I'm glad I didn't go bigger. I'm running the Nitto Terra Grapplers & I've been happy with them. They seem to wear a bit faster than the more expensive tires, but the ride is good & they're pretty quiet.

There is certainly a benefit to using 17" wheels. The tires are less expensive & there seem to be more choices. Also, in the event that you do go offroad, more rubber & less metal is a good idea.

Good luck with your purchase. Try to go with all-terrain tires and be sure to read the reviews. Remember, "chrome don't get you home" and it seems like it's just about out of style these days. Of course, you're Jeep, you're preference.

I was actually looking at possibly going to 33"s and adding the teraflex Levelling Kit but i wasnt sure how good/bad it would affect my DD part.

I was in the same boat about 18 months ago for my sons TJ. Ended up getting him a set of ProComp Xterrain ATs, ordered them for me, 33s and they have been great and they're a 40k tire.

Sounds like your JK and ours have similar uses. This is why I had to carefully weigh out what I wanted vs. what we needed. Sure, 35 inch MT's and a 2.5 to 4 inch lift looks great but it will affect ride quality some, plus there is no doubt that I would need to regear with that combo. So, my solution was a 1.75 inch Daystar budget boost, which actually gave me 2 inches of lift and 33 inch all terrian tires. An aggressive AT looks almost as good as a MT but will suit your needs much, much better. Out of the tires you are considering, I'd go with the Goodyears or Terra Grapplers. This is based on reviews of the tires and they just look better than your other choices.

That is one of my reasons for looking at the Falcons too.

Sadly it does boil down to whats needed vs wanting :( I agree with the AT vs the MT and i will have to go the AT route. I did look at the "Show me your 33"s" thread and really like the way they look and like you said it doesnt affect the ride quality much at all. I was thinking if i did go 33"s i would just get Spacers and a Teraflex levelling Kit which from what i have read should be more than enough and not mess with DD "performance"

Now what size tire will end up being a 33" or close to a 33"?
