Max tire size with modified Dana 44's
Just seeing what everyone’s opinion is on the max tire size/width that a modified dana 44 (front & rear) could handle with light to medium wheeling and daily driving duties. Here’s the set up I’m plan on doing. The front axle will have Evo magnum sleeves, C-gussets, LCA skids, Currie Enterprise track bar bracket, ******* Suspen ball joints and re-geared to 4.88. the rear axle will just get re-geared and the Currie enterprise track bar bracket. I could possibly re-weld the spring mounts to prevent spring bowing and add 1.5 wheel spacers. Any input will be greatly appreciated.
couple variables still. Auto or Manual most importantly (for gear reference). But on a modified 44 I'd be ok with running...mabe...a small 40x13.5, ie not a swamper or pitbull, but mabe a KM2. But you'd still run a risk. The other main factor is how hard you beat on it. And 4.88's wouldnt cut it. But thats max, and just my opinion. Generally speaking, a six speed, front/rear 44's and 4.88's with 37x12.5's should be a good combo.
oops, i guess those would be a factors. i have a 4dr rubi manual. and due to my current location. i dont get the opportunity to go wheeling that often. So I guess you could say that I do light wheeling, but I don’t want to limit myself to that. I pretty light footed so breaking axles shafts shouldn’t be a problem. 37’s are looking be the choice, but 38’s might be a possibly as well.
It's another of those questions that no one can answer. Some are fine running 37's on a d30, others are bending or shattering factory 30's and 44's running stock tires. But, gusseted and sleeved, and with your stated use, you 'should' be fine with 37's/38's. Tire placement and a light foot with go a long way... unless you have a front axle with the suspect metallurgy...
