Default Screeching sounds after wheeling

Went wheeling this weekend (mostly rocks, some mud) and this morning I have a horrible screeching sounds coming from the front right wheel.

After work I am going to take off the wheel and try to make sure there are no rocks between the rotor and dust shield. It really sounds like metal on metal contact.

Besides looking for rocks and obvious breakage, is there something specific I should check? Driving into work this morning, the sound seemed to diminish at high speeds but as slow speeds it was really loud.

Any help is appreciated!!

Josh

Had same type noise after wheeling, turned out to be gravel between rotor and dust shield.

I am hoping for a rock. I can't see anything yet, so I am hopeful when I take off the wheel I can find it and get it out of the way. Just don't want to drive it if there is something major. I started thinking wheel bearings? I am new to offroading so there are many new sounds (like the sound of an aired down tire driving through the off road park) and places for dirt and grime to hide.

Any other ideas?

Dirty I am good with. A few extra pin stripes? no problem. What sounds like metal on metal grinding just has me a bit concerned. If something is wrong, I just didn't want to make it worse.

I like the sprinkler idea! I mainly knocked off the large mud clods, but my Jeep stays fairly dirty. I agree, it is how a jeep is supposed to look!

After many water crossings in my old tj I developed a similar noise. Turned out to be the bearings in the right rear. I didn't know this until I was wheeling one day and heard a loud bang...it was my right rear axle sliding out, wheel and all. It was not a good day. I never used to inspect the bearings..lesson learned

As said, probaly debri or even a bent brake shield. I had that get bent on another vehicle and it was just scrapping the inboard side of the rotor, made a horrible sound. In my experience a wheel bearing would continue to groan and would just be louder at higher speeds, that is until it seizes!!

Turns out to be a tiny pebble between the brake shield and the rotor itself. Had to take off the wheel/tire to see it. Once out, we were go to go.

Thanks for the ideas and comments.

Had the same thing on myone doing exactly the same as you... Believe it or not that weird noise is your wheel bearing. I thought it was a rock, than a U-Joint... Nope, wheel bearing and Hub. You may find it ruins your speed sensor as well. All covered by warranty if you've got it. The sensor is only $12... The bearing and hub are more. Again, covered by warranty.

This happened to me last Sunday, Jeep went in on Wednesday, got it back Yesterday. It's only a couple hours work when they have the parts.

Good Luck!
