Limited slip options for Dana 44 Non Rubicon with 4.88 gear
Hey all,
I'm slowly gathering the parts to install 4.88 gears in my Jeep. While I am in there, I want to install limited slip diffs in both the front and rear. I was going to use True Trac for the front and rear, but looking at 4wheelparts.com the rear True Trac only works for 3.73 and lower. Is there another diff that's like the True Trac? I like that it uses gears and not clutch packs. Am I stuck using a Trac-loc? I don't want to do an electric or air locker.
Thanks.

It looks like you've missed the memo so here's the scoop on the Truetrac. There are 2 variations available for the D44 Truetrac- 3.73 and down and 3.92 and up. All JK 44s will use the 3.73 and down carrier regardless of the gear ratio used. JKs all use a 'thick' gear for 4.10 and lower ratios. So even if you have 5.38 gears you'll be using a carrier for 3.73 and down instead of the expected case for 3.92 and up. Clear enough?
The one glitch is that if you use stock gears on the Truetrac you may have to drill the case. Aftermarket gears are dual drilled for 7/16" and 1/2" RG bolts. Stock gears are single drilled for either 7/16" or 1/2" depending on the year. The Truetrac is dual drilled for 3/8" and 7/16". If you have factory gears with 1/2" holes you'll need to drill the Truetrac. The Truetrac case is hardened steel and VERY tough to drill.
Since you're using 4.88s none of the drilling should be an issue.
