Default Pros and cons of wheel adapters/spacers.

Looking to go 285/75 or 295/70 max but would require new 17 x 8 offset rims or offset adapters.

I did not want to buy a new set of rims but I am being told that the wheel adapters can cause shimmy at speed due to the fact that they are not perfectly balanced. What is the concensus hear about which is better or worse and why?

Thanks,
Finlander

A lot of people run Spidertrax or Teraflex. They cost more than some others. Don't get the cheap wheel spacers that just sit between the rim and rotor. Get spacers that bolt onto the rotor themselves that also have lugs for putting the wheel on. The flat plate type effectively shortens the usesable length of your factory lugs. BAD!

I don't know of any balance or shimmy issues when using the correct spacers. I have the Spidertrax installed and I drive pretty quick. No issues whatsoever.

Some tire shops will turn you away as soon as you say spacer. Some have no problem with them. I found one shop that actually made sure I was running the correct type spacer. One person here found a shop that wouldn't install spacers but would put wheels on them. They went home, installed the spacers themselves then went back to the shop and had the tires changed. YMMV.

I've been running Spidertrax wheel spacers for a little over 5 years, all 4 seasons, crawling & up to thruway speeds. They have never loosened up or given me one iota of balance issues or trouble. zip, zero, nada.

If i ever buy a new Jeep, it's one of the very first things i would add to it (unless i bought aftermarket wheels of course, then i would just get the correct backspacing)

i've run wheel spacers on all my jeeps over the rears for at least some period of time and, so long as they are high quality ones like the kind that spidertrax makes and you make sure to install them properly, there is absolutely nothing wrong with them, they are perfectly safe and they will behave just like wheels with less backspacing. the only down side to them is if you need to pull your rotor to work on your brakes or axle as you'll have one more step to deal with but really, that's about it.

Some of the off-brands are said to use grade 5 hardware, vs the grade 8 that the more popular brands use. So be sure to check into that before buying. And of course, proper install and maintenance.

Here is one that got some attention two days ago.

I would say that the thread title should be changed, though, as it appears to be due to the lugs coming off and not an issue with the spacers. But it does re-inforce the fact that you need to maintain both sets of lugs.

Just get a quality spacer like spidertrax. Install it properly and maintain it propery and you shouldn't have any issues

I run 2" Spidertrax spacers on both of my Jeeps. No problems what so ever!
