Default oil burning - anything you would do prior to taking to the dealer

I have a lifted 08 rubicon unlimite at 33000 miles with a few months of warranty left.

It is among other things burning oil at about 1 quart every 1500 miles. I can find no leakes anywhere and the tail pipe is black and more oily than carbon sooty. Im actually surprised i haved screwed an 02 sensor yet and threw a check light.

The jeep also on occasion will not start from the Park position. I have to move around the shifter or move it to the neutral position before it will start. My guess is a trans position sensor?

I was just wondering if there was anything you guys would do or document prior to dropping it off tomorrow morning other than jsut telling the serviceman that and leaving it. As this is a pretty serious issue that needs to be fixed and the service guy kinda looked at me as though i was "special" when i talked to him today.

Thanks Guys

Get your oil changed and have them start an oil consumption test. If possibe watch them drain the oil and have them show you how much was in it then it is documented. I am doing the same as mine is using oil too. Do a search on oil consumption on these motors it is unfortunately too common. Do this immediately while you still have a warranty

Up to a quart every thousand miles is okay according to the auto makers. I hope your dealer will help you. At least you can make sure it is documented before the warranty is up, may help the battle if the consumption gets worse after 36k.

You might try running 5W30 or even 10W30 if all else fails.

Just ridiculous you have to go through this with only 33k on a motor. WTF.

The thing is...we shouldn't have to use additives, run certain oils and octanes of fuel just to make make these engines not burn oil or ping. If they were 20 year old vehicles I could understand but not a few years old with low miles...

The most unfortunate part is i allready have to use the lucas oil stabilizer to counteract the dry start issue i have though i think the switch to mobil one oil filters has helped some as well : \

Wonder if it has something to do with the altitude? My dad just started burning oil in his JK with 130+K miles. My 2008 has no issues so far with 43k miles.

It seems to be random.

I also have an 08 and I go through about 1 Qt. every 1500 miles. I just put a Qt. in and call it a day, then change it at 3,000. Let the dealer straighten out the shifer problem.

I have 56k miles on mine and it does not use oil per say.

Sometimes I add 1/2 quart when I am close to an oil change but that is all so I dont consider that to be using oil.

I do not get dry starts with a mopar filter.

Just to chime in....had an '07 JKU and started going thru oil heavy about 30k miles. Never a sign of anything either. Was almost always exactly 1 quart/1000 miles. Instead of the oil change reminder sticker, I would use it to remember to re-fill every 1000 miles. Dealers never did anything...it's acceptable use so they said.

Last 6 months or so, would get the occasional no start in park too. Turn key, click, nothing else. 3 or 4 tries later, it would finally start up like nothing was the matter. Only happened 4 or 5 times in 6 months, but seemed to get more often towards the end.

Traded in the '07 with 51k miles on it for a '12 Rubi U. We'll see, but with new engine and all, hopefully no return of those issues at least.

lol 1 qt /1000 miles is not acceptable who makes these "rules"

Out of all the cars i have owned from my bmw 545 with 10900 miles that I drive like a race car every where i go to my 1970 datsun (which at 320000 miles had the original motor removed sat in my backyard for 2 years and then dropped back in and now at 388000 miles) have ever lost any detectable amount of oil - i love trying to buy American - where the hell did the strait 6 go
