Default Dealers are truly the root of all automotive evil

I'll preface this story as this did not occur at my normal Jeep/Dodge dealership as they have no 2012 Rubi's.

What a trip! I was setting up to purchase a 2012 2 door 6-speed Rubi today as a stable mate to our 08 2 door 6 speed.

Perfect 2 door, right options, what I envisioned as our "Gentleman's Off-Roader". The Pentastar is a wonderful powertain, this one has full doors (as opposed to our current half door monster) and a very very nice interior. Perfect blend of on and off road abilities.

I had already envisioned light mods for this Rubi and would be one, we took on road trips as well. Now when we are on a road trip we'll see dirt roads and state "wish we had the Jeep" since I am afraid to go down them with my Grand Marquis or Challenger. Then after getting this 2012 start on the Hemi or 4bt conversion to the 08.

Sticker was 34K and change which was fine and on Saturday they showed me 31,000 for a trade on my 2010 Challenger, Super Track Pack, 6 speed, R/T, 4000 miles with moonroof. Again, more than fair just below KBB.

So today, we set up and went to the dealership where the "procession of clowns" begin. First the Used Car Manager, then the F/I guy and so on (odd our salesman was no where around). My payoff on the Challenger is about 19K so, it was about a lateral wash for the Rubi. I love the Challenger, really do, but it's a 7 month car and it lives most of its life under a cover in the barn.

So by the time the F/I guy gets to us, suddenly he says the Challenger is only worth 25K on trade in (ummm ok) and that it is "September" and everyone is trading them in now. He went on to tell me about the "billet" Mustang (that is funny if you are a Ford guy) that they took in on trade and have to wholesale to Florida. Also, that my "Charger" just wasn't worth what KBB or NADA says. Understand this is a 40K car with 4,000 miles and lived its life wiped with a diaper.

I asked him well, I am not balking at the 34K price so meet me somewhere in the middle since I am looking at your sheet and know what the preferred price is and what the cost is.

Then he came back with a "well maybe another grand or so". At that point we just left. I am just so pissed at the waste of my time to go 80 miles to this dealership more than anything else. Why didn't they open their damn mouths Saturday of they suddenly didn't want to give KBB value since it is now 'September"?
Unfrickingbelieavable, there has to be a better way than the sleazy experience of buying a new vehicle. I think Porsche had it right when they wanted to do away with the traditional dealership system in the 80's.

What dealership was this? I'm very close to you and when I went to get my '06 Grand Cherokee appraised for trade in, they wanted to give me 2k UNDER trade in . I politely said no thank you and took possession of my new '12 Wrangler. I now have a GC to sell

That's dealers. I never trade in, you always get hosed unless it's a cheap car you just want to dump for an upgrade.
