Default Snorkel or No Snorkel?

So fellow Jeep friends, I have a question for you,

I recently saw a black Jeep JK pass me with the AEV snorkel and it looked really clean and it got me thinking about my next mod. Should I go with the snorkel or not? This mod will more than likely be for aesthetic appeal. Hardly ever do I find myself fording through 20"+ of water if anything more than 3"

As well for any of you that are currently running this snorkel, have you ran into any problems while running it/installation?

I'd like to know your guys+gals thoughts

Here is what it will be going on

It would look sweet on your rig, but Id never do it only for asthetic purposes...also with the aev snorkel you would be cutting you sheetmetal unless you purchased their heat reduction hood as well.

If you install the snorkel yourself, I can't stress enough to TAKE YOUR TIME while installing it.

I have yet to try it out personally, (hoping to at the end of the month).

If you get the pre-filter, get ready for a LOT of questions at the office, bar, stop lights, parties.

They'll all ask you "So why did you install a park light on your jeep?"

or, "Is that an exhaust stack?"

I wanna install a blue LED within it and tell people it's my bug zapper!

Thanks for the reply

I think if I were to get the snorkel I would go with the air ram. I could have sworn I saw someone of the forum here put an led in the pre-filter and it looked bad ass.

Added a snorkel a month ago and lost a considerable amount of range in my power bands vs my Airaid CAI. If it saves my engine from water then it is worth it (we do get some high water/mud here), but I wouldn't do it for looks.

I went with a custom snorkel/CAI and very happy with it. I personally don't care for the look of the snorkel running up my windshield. I can extend mine another 3' or switch to just a CAI under the hood if I decide it doesn't fit my needs anymore..

There are a few tales on this forum of JKs going gingerly through only a few inches of water and hydrolocking. Now, whether we know all the facts or not is questionable. But, after getting stuck in a ten inch downpour last year when I had to drive through seriously flooded streets, the "I don't ever drive through 20" of water" argument lost its relevance. Bottom line is very few of us can predict whether a snorkel will ever come in handy or not. Just because there isn't much in the way of stream crossings where you live doesn't mean that someday you won't find yourself in a situation where a water crossing is required--if even just because of heavy rains. With the ease with which these engines hydrolock (if you believe the stories posted), I decided it was a good idea. Beside, it does look really cool, and since my Jeep is primarily for overlanding/expedition travel, it is consistent with that purpose.

BTW: The remarks about losing HP/torque have been documented in YouTube videos. RIPP now offers a box that allows the snorkel or their CAI to be quickly swapped in and out, thus offering us the best of both worlds. Not certain of its usability without the Supercharger. More info here.

I totally agree with mark on this one, you just never know. You may get half way through a trail that you have done 50 tines, and but because of snow melts or heavy rains you may run into unexpected water crossings.

After 1 time of that I decided it was worth it to get a snorkel. Since installed I've only been able to find on road water holes thanks to Irene. But either way it does look pretty cool.

Definitely be prepared for questions about it.

I haven't been in water deeper than the height of my tires, but it seems that every run I go on lately, the water seems to get deeper. Being that I have a snorkel, I obviously agree with Mark's stand point.

I've enjoyed having my AEV.
It's a great conversation starter

I hit a (deeper than I thought) mud hole on my last trail ride and water washed over the top of my hood.
Scary!
Breather tubes were extended and snorkel installed before the ride. No problems, no worries!
It's cheap insurance.
