I have been doing a LOT of reading on this and everyone seems to reccomend 4.88's. I want to stay highway capable and can't help but think this will put my rpm's too high. Anyone 6sp.4.56 and 35's?

Are you happy? Do you wish you went with 4.88's. Thanks in advance.

I don't have them but if I were going to regear that is what I would get. I have the 3.73s with 35s and it is just doable on the highway, can run 6th gear most of the time. Have to use 5th for the steeper hills and into the high winds we have around here sometimes. Offroad have no problem with the 3.73s at all. Rode with a bud that had the same tires and the 4.10s and that is a really good setup. If I had a rubi with the 4.10 I would not even think about changing my gears. If I happen to find a good deal on some rubi axles I will put them under my sport no question.

So I would say again that the 4.56 would be a great choice with the manual. If you were running with the auto then a lower gear would be called for. Had another bud running these tires on a rubi with the auto, it was terrible.

 

I have a totally different view than most in this forum regarding gearing. I really do not care about loosing 6th gear and/or downshifting to the next numerically lower gear (6th to 5th or 5th to 4th) as long as i can keep the RPM in the sweet spot for the speed or load the jeep demands. I do not care if it is 6th, 5th or4th.
What i DO want is a usable 1st gear that can actually make my jeep move without slipping the clutch, specially when i am in a paved hill. When you go bigger (tires) you actually loose your LOW gearing and can ONLY compensate with using the T-case. Your tall gearing, you can simply compensate by down shifting.

I've been in 4x4 since i my first jeep (m38a1) at age 14. I am now 45 with many 4x4's in history ( i tend to mod all my cars), however my most recent story is my JKU. Keep in mind that i currently live in Costa Rica at 3000 ft altitude and literally in the middle of a mountain. My jeep on 35's is OK with 5.13's, however i think 4.88's would have done better to balance my low/high gearing.

 

I think 35s and 4.56 with the 6spd would be just fine. However, if you EVER plan on going bigger than 35s you may wish you had gone witht the 4.88s.

Just did 5.13s with my 6 speed and 35s and LOVE it.

 

I did 4.88's with 35's and 6 speed manual. If I had to do it over, I would definately consider the 4.56's. The thing with the 4.88's is if you do a lot of highway driving, you won't see over 65 without pushing the RPM's over 3000. I know Koko went with 4.56's and loves them.....

 

I'd recommend the 4.56 gearing. I have the 37" bfgoodrich at which is not a true size 37 and is light in weight. I did have 5:13 and did not like my rpm's taching at or above 3000 in 6th gear going 70mph and it seems I had to keep feeding it fuel for it to maintain the speed. With the 4:56 I am at about 2400-2500 rpm's in 6th gear going 70mph.

 

I like this thread. It makes me feel better about my gear thoughts.
