Mines a Yakima rack if i remember right, I've been stuck away from my jeep for almost 8 months now, and i cant remember the part number but it was called the landing pad or landing feet or something like that. either way its very sturdy, had 3 kayaks on it for 5 hours of 70+mph, easily removable and it has little caps when the bars are taken off, and its been on for over a year and no leaks. i would highly recommend it.

Do you have a hard top or soft top? For a soft it will be a little harder to find a rack that work and allow you to still put the top down easily. Jeep discontinued the tire carrier, but you can still get the kind that goes in the hitch and holds up to 6 pairs of skis

I have a hardtop and I originally wanted the hitch carrier but nobody seems to make just a ski carrier. You basically have to buy a bike rack and then buy the adapter for the skis. Way too much money that way because I will never use it for carrying bikes.

I like that but I don't think I want to drill through the top. Want something like that but where the brackets clip to the rain gutters along the side.

You need the 300 gutter mount footpack and 58" load bars. And of ourselves the ski/board carrier of your choice. XL fairings will help gas mileage some too.

Why not using spare tire mount?

Mine is an Italian Alu ski/bike carrier easy to use. I used it on soft overlanding too and works great. The same main alu frame of the carrier suports attchments of both 2 bikes & ski carriers.
For bikes i recommend to buy optional alu grab arms.
I believe Yakima in the US has also such an idea; an advise, do not harm your hardtop!

Good Luck
Cheers
John

I have the thule gutter mounts and cross bars, and yakima big cat snowboard clamps, bought them off of craigslist, for about a quarter of the price. Made multiple 5 hour trips with snowboards on top, no issues

Little something to think about with a hitch mounted rack. Think of what all vehicles look like after spending a day driving on wet mountain roads? That's what your skis or snowboards are going to look like with all of that road grime on them.

Default Placement?

So I bought some Yakima clamps, 58" bars, fairing and the big cat ski carriers. What is the best place for the bar up front? Is it best to have it all the way forward with the fairing or should I go back as far as I can on the gutter of the t-tops? What is better for noise and gas mileage?

Thanks....JD
