Extra Cash = New Tires?
I got a bit of extra cash just under $1000....I want to get some new tires and rims for one of my jeeps. Right now i have some old 31" super sports which are on their last treads, I asked a store here in Miami what they would charge for 4 33" super swampers and 4 rims and they said $1600 does this sound like a lot of money? Should I go somewhere else? Anything would help? Im looking at getting a larger set of tires with more offroad capability but not going to far out of my price range. Thanks - Josh
That doesn't sound like a bad deal. To be honest with you, you most likely won't be able to get much for $1000. Put that cash away and keep saving until you can afford the setup that you really want. Don't buy something your going to regret in 6 months. And please, for the love of god, get a full set of five. IMO, nothing screams mall crawler more than a rig with 4 mudders and the stock spare on the back.

What's the guy going to do with that donut when the other 4 tires are 37 inches tall? Makes me want to rip it off with my hammer and roll the tire into a river.
Have you thought of going to a 15" wheel? That can save some significant coinage especially if you were going to replace your stockers anyways. 15" steel wheels and 33s can be had for your price range if you look around.
As for the full size spare, be smart and a donut is fine. I know many hard core crawlers who don't even carry a spare. Just make sure you have a quality tire repair kit with an air source. BTW, those full size spares do a great job overstressing you stock tire carrier and bending you mounts/hinge.

thanks for the replies...the tires are going to be going on a 1980 CJ7...as for the spare tire...i don't want to waste the money.. On my wrangler I got a spare tire for the set on it right now, and have never used it....its just a brand new tire sitting on the back....i know I should have rotated the tire on with some of the ones of the truck now, but as far as im concerned its just a waste of money, and I have already had bending of the tire rack on the cj. The rims i am looking of something small and cheap but made well....15" would be more than fine. I am running 18" on my wrangler, but want something more on the cj because I will be going into the swamps down in Miami with it. Thanks for the advice again...

Typically, the smaller your rim size, the cheaper the tires will be. This seems pretty counter-intuitive since a tire will need more rubber for a smaller rim at a particular diameter, but that is how tires are usually priced. That said, in my fairly extensive wheel and tire research, $1600 seems to be a pretty good deal! Also keep in mind that tires like super swampers do not usually have treadlife guarantees or warranties, and therefore you may be buying new ones sooner than you expected.
