Default Help choosing proper lift kit for 2012 JK Unlimited!

Owned 86 CJ-7, 89 Wrangler, 00 Wrangler TJ, and now ready to buy a 12 Unlimited with the Pentastar. I'm just starting to do some research on lifts and would love to hear some feedback and opinions from those that have experience. I had a 2.5" skyjacker on my 00 Wrangler and never had any issues, but I am reading that some people say they are issues with them now and have part failures.

Basically I am looking for a decent lift (not body) to get the Jeep up a little higher and leveled to run 33x11.50's clear of any rubbing. This will be a pavement pounder and if it sees off road it would be trails and nothing serious. I just want to choose the proper lift to give me the look, ride, and quality so I'm not having to deal with failed parts or additional part changes outside of what the lift kit would come with. I welcome all of our recommendations and thoughts. Thanks!

Meant to add...moral is I'm looking for 1.5-2.5" total lift, and will have the 3.73 gears.

Great point...completely forgot that te Jeep will have 17's. Will definitely be purchasing aftermarket wheels either 16 or 17 so I suppose I would be looking to put a 285 or 295 size tire on as well.

Alot of people running the Teraflex 2.5" lift. That would be a good one to look into.

Any budget boost/coil spacer lift is plenty to clear 33s. The Teraflex 2.5" BB with shock extensions, the AEV 2", Full Traction 2" all come to mind. Plus you retain the factory ride quality and they are good for easy to moderate offroading.

i believe on the forum there's a thread somewhere that tereflex (or someone) is coming out (or has come out) with a 2.5" lift for the 2012s with a little less shock travel to prevent the front drive shaft from hitting the exhaust crossover pipe.

and under extreme articulation people with 2012s are tearing up their rear drive shaft boot on the stock evap cannister skid. if you're getting a JKU 4 dr you might consider a poison spyder evap skid to give you more clearance between the drive shaft and evap skid. the skid won't work with a 2 dr.

it sound like the kind of mild use you're planning you might not need either, but if you do both of these things you should be good for whatever you do.

You can pretty much run 33" tires w/o a lift, but a leveling kit or 2" lift would be more than enough for 33" tires. I have an EVO leveling kit and eventually plan on 33-34" tires. Depending on what tires you go with you may need either wheels with less back spacing or 1.5" wheel spacers to prevent rubbing on the control arms.

Thanks Armycop,

Do you happen to know I I would need new shocks if I went with teraflex 2" BB? Teraflex certainly seems like the most popular and highest regarded company when it comes to lifts.

Thanks Robar,

When you put your leveling kit on did you change any shocks or have to change anything else besides what was provided in the kit?

You can get the TF kit with shock extensions or new shocks.
