Default Toyo Open Country M/T

Looking at going with the Toyos when I move up to "35's". I was looking at their website and see that they offer two tires in the "35" range. They are as follows:

Tire Size Approved Rim Width Range (inch) Overall Diameter (inch) Overall Width (inch) Tread Depth (1/32") Tire Weight (lbs.)
LT285/75R17 (34X11.50R17) 7.5-8.0-9.5 34.1 11.6 19 70.6
35X12.50R17LT 8.5-10.0-11.0 34.8 13.2 21 82.7

So, I'm thinking that the 12 lbs. difference in weight outweighs the 0.7" difference in height. Also, I'm running the stock Moabs (8" wheel width) for the time being and not even sure if the 35x12.50R17 would work as the approved rim width as per the website only has 8.5" width as a min. for that tire. Lastly, I think the narrower tire would be better for North Dakota winters to cut through rather than float on top of the snow. Just thinking out loud here. Any thoughts/suggestions???

I love my 35x12.5 but you make a good argument for getting the LT285s. We don't have too much snow over here so I would probably pick the 35's again

Bump. Seriously rethinking the order of a few things on my "wish" list and might go rubber before some other mods. Anyone have any input?

Anything over 33's will rub with the moabs. You'll need a lift and diff offset wheels to go any bigger. I'm running the Toyos and love em.

Already swapped out my stock X coils for JKU Rubi 18/59, Teraflex leveling kit and Spidertrax so I'm good to go as far as any rubbing goes. Just don't know if the extra weight is worth the little extra height...

I have the 285's and they are great in the snow but I do think your prolly going to need wheel spacers.

Id save the weight over gaining the height myself. Unless you need every extra bit of ground clearance that you can get. The 285's might be cheaper, they will be lighter, you will not have as much performance loss as you would with 35's, and those 285's look great on a 17 inch wheel. Good luck!

The stock Moabs are 7.5" wide, but a lot of people run 12.5" wide tires on them. When you run that wide of a tire on the Moab wheel you will lose some of the height. So you will probably only gain width and weight with the 35's. For example I have two friends with 35x12.5r17 nitto TG's. One on Moabs the other on 17x9 steel wheels. The Moabs measure under 34" and the 17x9's measure almost 35". Both at the same psi and not mounted on the jeep.

If gas mileage isn't a big concern, then by all means get the Toyo's. I've heard from others that the mpg's will take a large hit due to the overall weight of the tire, not to mention the additional stress, fyi keep an eye on your ball joints and C's if you haven't gotten them gusseted yet. But overall, one of the best tires made based on reviews on this site and via word of mouth on the trails.

The weight isn't going to kill you. Getting them rolling takes a slight amount of extra power, but from 10-70mph the tire drag from weight is essentially the same.

The points made about the narrower tire in snow are certainly valid. I'd have either of them siped so you have extra grip edges for driving on slick surfaces. Another consideration is the tread depth which is a 1/16th deeper on the 35x12.5s.

On the Moabs, you'll definitely need wheel spacers.

I definitely liked my Toyo MTs on the JK. I also run them on my truck. I need to deal with a fair amount snow as well, lots of heavy wet lake effect snow and don't have issues. I do have all my tires siped which is a bit of a chore here as I need to drive them 45 minutes away to get it done, but definitely worth the effort.
