Over 2k to replace this POS tranny, 4k if the stealership does it!

Do I have any options? Do I have to replace with another of the same shitty tranny?

I was hearing a clicking sound from my JKU this summer also. I took it in and had the tranny fluid changed and the filter cleaned. It has run great since then. I've not heard any strange noises from it either.

A month or so ago I noticed trans fluid on the skid plates. I took it back to the shop and they replaced the gasket, no charge.
In your case I would start small. Change the fluid. Check for exhaust leaks near the transmission. Sometimes the heat shields vibrate and rattle so you may think it's the transmission.
You didn't mention if the transmission was slipping or grinding, so I'm betting it's not a major problem.....hopefully !

If you do have to replace the transmission, the only other option that I know of is to change to a manual transmission. But, if your mechanic thinks it's the torque converter, why does the entire transmission need replacing? I don't know about that....

No grinding, no real slipping either, but the clicking sound is bizarre. Again it only does it in park while revving and while driving in 1st and 2nd gear. Today it made the noise from a cold start twice at idle and gradually went away. Stops generally when it shifts into3rd gear most times and never in 4th or putting in reverse from idle.

I'm not sure why he said to replace the whole tranny, but thats what he said would most likely be needed. He didn't get into the tranny but based it off a road test. He's been doing this for 30 years and is a family friend, so I trust him, but I'm sure he could be wrong at the same time.

Is this a semi common thing with JKs?

I wheel her, but far from extreme. I don't beat of the Jeep at all, nothing like what I put my old YJ through.

Again do I have any real options to replace the crap 42RLE with anything else that will match up somewhat easily?

As stated earlier a fluid and filter change would be my first plan of action. You can get this done at a juffy lube joint for about $75 if you don't wrench yourself and that is a lot less than a new transmission. I am not a transmission specialist but I get real skepticle when you say the transmission isn't slipping.

Thanks and I do wrench and that will be my 1st step. Getting a minor operation later today but come Sunday I'm going to start getting into this thing.

It's not slipping. But this is a loud metallic clicking sound that seems to be originating in the front part of the trans and it coincides with the rpms and follows shift patterns.

It occurred again today on the cold start without touching the skinny pedal.

You might also pull the inspection cover at the bottom of the flywheel ring gear and see if anything has come loose or gotten inside there somehow. Maybe roll the engine over and see if any flywheel bolts have backed out or anything of that nature that could be causing the noise.

I drove it again and that's exactly what I just thought, this sure seems like an issue with flywheel.

You don't have to replace the tranny if it's the TC. TC's function based on fluid dynamics - if the fluid is low or bad you'll get odd results. Have your shiftpoints changed at all? If they have you may need to simply put new or better fluid in the TC. Note this is based on experience with TCs in Diesel pickups and may be different on the JK. If your shiftpoints haven't changed I'd be surprised if it's the TC since that's usually the first symptom.

this is off topic, but F*** jiffy lube. i went there to get oil change (i usually do it myself but was hurting on time) and after the oil change was done, drove home and noticed oil spots under the vehicle. Come to find out, they cracked the oil pan and wouldnt admit to it, all they did for me was JB weld... as a temp fix, and went on with their day. NEVER again will i use jiffy lube for anything, at least anywhere in MD
