Default SuperChips Flashpaq - I give up!

Its a great tool, the crawl mode, setting tire size, axle ratio, and idle for winching all work well.

BUT...

The engine tuning (87 oct, etc) and the pedal sensitivity (especially for my 6sp manual) are not cutting it! I even have the latest version that allows you to adjust the pedal sensitivity, which helped, but its still only so-so.

The big problem / "I give up", is the tuning for daily driver use (87 oct). Its a jeep, and there is no way I'm dumping 91 octane into a jeep! If you set it to 87, it should work flawlessly with 87 (even with the crappy 10% ethanol mix they pass off as gas these days). The constant uphill pinging/rattling from the ecu timing setting is not only annoying, but I worry it could damage the engine / lifetime warranty.

I know I've read other posts here saying using 89 oct with 87 tune can "help" but that defeats the purpose.

If Superchips is listening, please spend some time getting the timing to work properly in 87oct mode for the 3.8L jeeps. Until, I (and many others I assume) are back to the stock mode.

Before you give up, call tech support. They have some modified tunes for people with the pinging issues. Did you experience pinging before installing the tuner?

Default 87 octane

I don't think that we are supposed to run anything higher than mid-grade in this engine. I find that mine runs like crap on premium. I get better throttle response and mpg from mid grade as opposed to low grade. Good luck with the other stuff.

I didn't think that the 87 was really cutting it on mine, so I bumped up to the 91 tune. It took a tank or two for it to "learn" the new tune, but then it was totally worth it for the extra dollar or two that the difference is from 87 to 91 octane. I could definitely tell a difference between the two.

I've also heard that some people like using the Tow tune instead of the 87.

That, and if it continues to bother you, I then added a SprintBooster to my JK. And that, paired with the Flashpaq, really changed everything for the better!

I took your advice and contacted their tech support. After a few rounds of email, their conclusion is (paraphrasing of course): Because you have bigger tires, and heavy bumpers/armor/etc, the tune cannot handle the difference, so run 89/91 octane to support the 87 tune option.

Yea....special.

Given that returning to stock gives me no pining problems, that's where I am going to stay. Interesting that Jeep OEM tune can handle the differences, but a company that is in the business of tuning cannot. That may be a bit harsh, but running a "custom" tune with the non-stated octane is stupid IMHO.

Maybe I'll look into dumping this in the FS forum and buying an AEV ProCal (or similar).

They do offer a modified tune for the pinging. Its a little watered down due to the retarded timing, but it is still better than stock. This tune normally corrects that issue. I have been dealing with pinging for some time, but some of it I believe is due to the oil consumption and carbon buildup. Contact tech and try the tune. It is definitely better than the procal which does nothing for the performance besides correcting shift points

Superchips gave up on JK support years ago. Everybody that kisses their ass here will see what I mean when they actually need their support and get nothing.

I ran mine with 89 gas on the 87 tune and my exhaust was popping. I am deaf and wasn't sure if was pinging or not. I switched to the tow tune with 93 gas and it worked smoother, but now I have a rattling sound.

Will be clamping my heat shields and perhaps I will go back to the 87 tune to see if the popping I had was the heat shield. It happens at 2-2500 RPM.

EDIT: But yeah... I am always paranoid since I can't hear. I wish the Superchips was a "solid" product that I would feel comfortable putting 87 in on an 87 tune and not worry at all.

I have had my superchips for a little of a month now. I have only ran the 91 and 87 tune so far. When I was running the 91 tune I did notice a little pinging when I got on it pretty good. I switched back to the 87 tune and haven't had any problems. My only complaint is I wish the pedal sensitivity was a little more sensitive. I did help a little just not quite what I was hoping for.
