Default Final Plan: Tires, Lift, and Gearing for 2012 Manual

I've posted on a couple of threads and gotten lots of good feedback. I am ready to lock in on the details now though and start ordering parts. Big picture, I'm looking at 33x12.5's with 2.5in of lift, regeared to 4.56. This is for a 2012 manual. Goals are wheeling, hauling, and daily driving in WA State.

Anyone running this setup for confirmation?

I know some folks have said i should do this in steps, but i have more money than brains and like to get everything nailed down all at once if I can.

Thanks all.

I think 4.56 gear might be a bit much for 33s. My heavier unlimited came with 4.10s and it was too much gear for the stock 32s. I figure it would be good for 33x12.5 though. The only way I'd run 4.56 gears in a '12 is if I was planning to run at least a 35" tire at some point, and if thats in your future might as well do it now

Hi

I also have a 2012 manual.
I have a 2,5" Teraflex lift and BFG 33x12.5x15 wheels.

I want to do gears now and after a lot of research, and advice from people that know more than me..... It will be 4,56 on my manual.

I need to save a bit more as I want to do ARB lockers at the same time.

Regards
Paul

i've been driving my 98 TJ manual with 3" lift 33x8.5x15 for the past 10 Ys. 4.56 work like a charm.

i'm planning to get a JK manual but with 35s and 4.88.... engine swap to complete the package.

I'm running 4.56's in 2012 manual unlimited with 35's.. It's perfect! You should be fine with 33's, it'll have you around 2600 rpm @ 70mph.. plus it'll allow for bigger tires in the future without regearing again..

IMO. you really don't need to regear.

We have built several 2012's with 35's and they all had plenty of power. I'm running 37's on mine and it still gets up and go's better than my 07 2 door with 5.13 gears and 37's.

Let me add a bit more then since I still see a few folks saying 4.56 may be too much for 33's.

I am currently at 3.73. I personally do not feel like 3.73 is going to get me what I want as I move up to 33's. So next up is 4.1. Being that I want to add a heavier front axle, change out to heavy duty bumpers and a warn winch, throw up extra lights, body armor, and the like... All of that weight adds up. I think most folks would agree that 4.1 gearing makes sense for 33's with this kind of setup. At the same time though, I've repeatedly seen posts where folks who regeared have said 'figure out what you think you'll need and then go one higher.

Some may argue that 3.73 is adequate for what I've described. I didn't buy a jeep to drive an adequate vehicle though. 4.1 is definitely a minimum as far as I am concerned. What I am trying to decide is if 4.56 is going to give me the extra power I want for big hills, mudding, and towing. If I can still get optimum power out of a 4.1 gearing setup with 33's considering these conditions well then maybe that's good enough. But I want to be CERTAIN it's going to be a good decision before I dump the cash into it. If I go to 4.1 and find out that it's not quite going to cut it like I thought, then I'll have to lay down the cash to get up to 4.56 anyway.

So I guess my real question is to folks running 4.1 with 33's and similar goals... Would 4.56 be something worth considering? Or, for those running 4.56 with 33's and similar goals, does 4.56 feel like too much?

I don't care about the money - what I'm looking for is perfection. No, I did not buy a Rubi - in hindsight maybe I should have, but I went in at over 30k on an all cash deal for my new baby - I wanted to move soon rather than later, with the plan to build up my jeep to the exact specs I wanted. I already knew a heavier front axle and regearing was in the works, along with a few other things. I have what I have now though - and (like I said) am now striving for perfection.

So there's a bit more information to work with as folks off their advice. All of which is greatly appreciated btw. ;-)

Thanks...

I have a 2012 JKU with the 3.73 gears and 33" BFG AT. IMO, does not need a re-gear unless you want to move to 35" tires. Even then, 4.1 would be fine in a 2012, maybe the 4.56 then.

I would recommend not doing the gears at first. Get an AEV Procal for $150 and tune it accordingly. Then if you're still not happy, consider the gears.
