Water Fording With Cold Air Intake
Any experiences in river-crossing and water fording with any brand of cold air intake? I noticed that the OE air box opens at the front side where it might suck in water when it splashes..please advice before I get one..
If the filter is more exposed, like a cone, etc...its going to get wet more easily.
I had to winch quite a few rigs out of the Pine Barrens, etc...who'd splashed their K&N's, etc.

Most of the CAI's are designed to increase air flow, and eliminate the stock's torturous air intake route....and leave the filter completely open, or, in a "Splash Shield" or heat shield, etc (They get wet there)
If you want to keep the water out of your intake...drive in shallower water than the intake opening...or get a snorkel.
They also sell filter covers (Pre-filters) that let in air, but are somewhat water repellant, which help against occasional mild splashes.
The Volant is pretty enclosed, and the filter is suspended above the bottom of the air box...so, IIRC, its the closest one to providing stock level water protection. I have one, I am in the middle of plumbing a snorkel to it (Just have a bit of fab work left, as the BL changed the relationships a bit...)

Thanks TEEJ! Was looking at the stock air box and yes some fab work on the intake like a snorkel pointed to the rear should be better than an open system CAI for deep water crossings...or with a CAI, don't cross deep rivers ...
Personally, every hydrolocked vehicle I have seen has had a CAI. Never say a hydrolocked vehicle with a stock airbox. May be coincidence, but I'll never put one on, not worth it for the 1.63 ponies that you may gain.
DO NOT FORD WATER WITH A CAI
its just asking for a problem, some may not look deep then next u know its over the hood.... this has happen to me. i have a snorkle and still was scared..........nothing happen thank god but with a stock air box or a CAI its just asking to hydro lock IMO
