Has anyone else had this happen? I was driving yesterday, nothing out of the ordinary. Don't recall hearing any large sounds or noise. Then just started getting a banging sound from the rear of my JK. I listened as I drove, listening for when it occured and it was only when hitting bumps. I pulled over and crawled underneath to find that the upper rear shock barpin was gone! Mounting bolts are both there but the pin was gone. It must of snapped and then each side slid out from its mounting bolt. Anyway, I went to my dealer. They couldn't get me a pin without ordering a new shock. They asked me what I wanted to do so I just told them to please remove the bottom bolt so I can take the shock out and atleast me mobile without it smashing around up the jeep.
I called Trailmaster,(Performance Automotive Group), and they were great. They are sending me out a replacement plus and extra one. I'm going to replace both of them. Mostly so I can look at the other one and see if it is a corrosion issue, manufacturing flaw, or just a fluke, they have about 25K on them.

Anyone else have this happen? I'm running just the basic Trailmaster SSV shocks. It is a shame because I plan on upgrading my shocks to either Bilstein resevoir, Elkas or Fox shocks in June.

 

This happened to me on both of my rear shocks. I am not sure where you can get pins to replace the current one, but they do sell bar pin replacement set-ups that give you a stronger setup. I ended up just replacing my shocks.

3 words...BAR PIN ELIMINATOR. Any 4x4 supplier, Northridge, for example, should be able to get them. The bar pin can be an aggravation, even if it doesn't break, by making noise. The eliminator allows you to remove the bar, and mount the shock using the bushing, like the bottom end does. Well worth the 30 or 40 bucks they cost, IMO.

Edit: OK, so I missed the price, by a bit, but I blame inflation...LOL.
