Default tires shaking on the dunes

I take my jeep out on the dunes every now and then. I am a little bit concerned though. When I turn the wheel, and am making a turn, my tires shake back and forth kinda like death wobble. I noticed the same was happening on my friend's dodge. Is this normal or do i need to tighten something or what? You can see my mods in my signature. Thanks

Believe it has to do with your driving style or maybe lockers and driving style. You may just have to back off just a tiny bit on the throttle to have things smooth out

Assuming you are in 4wd and possibly have a little wheel spin going on this is completely normal.

Its just your front end gaining and loosing traction at a rapid rate.

Ok cool. It seems like it would be really bad for my jeep but, i guess if it is normal than it will probably be fine. Thanks

Mines does the same regardless of turning....seems to start as soon as i get near the top of a hill and the tires start spinning..but mine shutters quite violently. Buddies old 2 dr tj doesnt shake, but my 4 dr '11 rubicon does and gets stuck. granted he has lift and i am still stock with longer body. Appears my traction control is not shutting off in 4lo or 4hi, per dealer this should be happening. In shop today for them to look at. Hoping they find something. Next time on trail will manually shut her down if need be.

maybe i am using to mutch throttle but seems if i dont i wouldnt be able to get over some of the steeper hills.

Airing your tires down should help. If your running full pressure you will get nasty wheel hop and eventually break something in the drive train like U-joints. Also, wheel hop is very common in sand, thats all there is to it. It takes a little but learning to drive in sand like how to approach a climb and throttle control.

I have had my 4 door in the dunes of southern california with stock tires trying to stay with a CJ5. That was near impossible. I had to drive much more aggressive to start with him.

I will do much better now that I have 35's due to much more flotation than the stock tires.

ya, its really weird. My friends old cherokee with almost bald AT tires does better in the sand than my Jk with newish mud terrain tires. My other friend has a dodge, and it also has new mud tires, but it also seems to get better traction than my jeep. Im a bit disappointed with my jeeps performance on the dunes. It does great everywhere else though.

Are you leaving esp on? I had read that ESP was bad in sand and a quick google search of jeep ESP and sand came up with a bunch of posts about turning it off. I don't have personal experience yet but heading to the dunes in a month so wanted to see if it was ESP

My front end shook horribly side to side with unbalanced tires and the steering stabilizer disconnected. I was working on it at the time, so it was temporary, but right around 30mph, if I hit a bump or hit the brakes the front end would shimmy until I came to a complete stop. Very violent shaking, worried I was going to shear a bolt or something... So check your steering stabilizer. Might need a beefier one if you have a lot of weight in big tires and aftermarket wheels...
