Congrats you are part of the club
From everything I have gathered it is time to start looking for a new shaft. Once it is ripped it will keep getting worse and come completely off. You will loose all of the grease on the shaft and it will eventually seize up which isn't good. I have a local driveline shop building me a new one but until they are done I have been greasing the shaft
No pun intended....

Is it the long boot in the center of your ds? If so, that's just the boot over the slip joint. Your ds could last forever without it (you'll notice that Tom Woods and JE Reel shafts come without one altogether).
Just check it after wheeling, clean if off if it needs it, and every so often hit it with some really sticky grease like Amsoil 5th Wheel.
Now, if you're talking about your CV boot, and it's throwing grease, then yeah, you need a new ds, pronto.

if it's the accordian looking slip shaft boot, you'll want to start saving up for a new aftermarket shaft. leaving well enough alone will cause the slip shaft to cease up over time and that'll do damage to your cv joint. also, repeated contact with your tranny sump pan will cause it to start leaking. aftermarket shafts are much narrower and do not have this problem.
now, if we're talking about your cv boot on the output shaft, yeah, if that's spitting grease now, you need a new shaft as soon as possible.

so long as they're balanced well, drive shafts are pretty much drive shafts. i personally recommend coast or j.e. reel because i've always seen them to be quality products that come standard with spicer or made in the usa neapco u-joints and without having to order them up like that as an upgrade as you would with other popular brands.

Correct me if I"m wrong, but don't aftermarket shafts come with a seal built in which is why they don't use the boot?
