Play nice my friends. Lol

Ok, so as the title suggests, we are talking about a 2-door, 6-speed with D30 up front. I'm planning the gears to go in with my lift and 35" MTR/Ks (which measure more like 34.5"). I care not about gas milage. My goal is to stay at what I'm used to and maintain strength.

I'm sitting on ~32" tires with 3.21 gears right now. According to the chart, that has a 70-mph RPM of 1,983. Now, on my new ~34.5" tires, there is no gear set that would bring me "back to stock".

That said, am I rationalizing correctly that either gear would be better than my stock 3.21s? And if that is true, am I guessing correctly that the reason folks lean towards 4.88 in the D30 is to keep the ring gear strong?

I know this has been beaten to death, but I'm hoping to hear some responses specific to my scenario.......I'll add that it is driven about a tank a week on road and about a tank every two months off road. I'm also planning to do the Detroit True Trac in the front when I change out the carrier. There are rocks where I wheel and the reason for building this up is to increase the number of trails I can actually follow folks onto.....

Cheers all (BTW, after this decision it's only a matter of a few days before I can post up pics of my newly build up heep!)....

Default 4.88's

I would not go 5.13's for one they are getting quite small on a dana 30 when you go that low. Second I run 4.88's on my 315/75r16's and am at 2700 rpm at 70 mph and to me that is high enough.

Im the same, 2door, 6sp, D30 and I run 4.10's with my dick cepek FC-II's and they are a tall 35" they actually measure 35". They make my 35" toyo MT's look small. ANYWHO. I run at about 2000 rpm in 6th on the hwy at 110kph (about 70 I think). I'm perfectly happy with it, and with the amount of people regearing they are pretty easy to find in almost new condition for pretty cheap. Just my 2 cents!

I have 5.13's in my Jeep, which is basically like yours. 4.88's are a little more reasonable since it's ~120 RPM slower at 70 MPH and the pinion is slightly bigger/stronger.

I love my TrueTracs, front and rear.

Well, I'm leaning towards the 4.88. Thanks guys for your responses. I think either will work fine, and if the 5.13s make me scared to wheel, I'd rather go 4.88 and let my life go on....

Cheers all. I'm going in for my makeover on Tuesday.

I was going to regear but decided to get Superchips first to see how it does. Also $300 is alot easier to swing than $1100. I have 35 Duratracs, 2 door, and a 6spd. Since I bought my 07 X used, I have no idea what my gears are. I have a slim chance that I got lucky and have the tow package, which means 4.10s. Now back on topic- I did the "superchips" throttle tune and the 87 octane tune. Prior to this, 6th gear was for only coasting and long down hill decents. Now I can pass in it. So my advice to you is-No more than 4.88 and the Superchips tune. Hell, i'd even be curious to see how well it does with 4.56 and the tune.
