a lot of play while driving at highway speeds or, a lot of play in general as in, while at a stand still, you can turn the wheel quite a bit left and right without actually turning the wheels?

Is just the steering wheel moving or does the entire steering column move? Do you have the height adjustment lever in the locked position. It is on the left side of the column to raise and lower the height of the steering wheel.

Search for the write up on installing cruise control. Still, what you describe sounds strange. After you pull the center cap and airbag (disconnect battery first!) there's just one center bolt holding the wheel on. Even when that is removed the sucker is on tight and won't budge without a fight. That's why the instructions come with a warning not to hit yourself in the face when the wheel finally pops loose.

In case anyone else has this problem, i was able to fix it by tightening the main bolt under the airbag. Its as good as new now.
