35's with Auto Tranny - 4.88 gears or 5.13 ??
Hey guys,
I want to know what you guys recommend.
I have 35's with 3.73 gears and will be regearing in the near future.....it's a 2008 with the auto tranny with Dana 30 up front and 44 in rear. From what I hear the largest I can go is 5.13 on a Dana 30.
I have heard mixed reviews and i'm torn between either 5.13 or 4.88's. Someone I wheel with threw 5.13's into their Dana 30 and it basically exploded :(
It's my daily driver so I need it to do well both in city and on highway and want the best all around gear ratio .....since I am in Canada and we pay over $5 gallon up here.

It comes down to what you want. Better hwy economy 4.56 or better off road and crawl ratio 5.13. 4.88 is the medium for both on an auto. I have 4.88s on my 6 spd. It's really good off road but I would get better fuel economy with 4.56
Most of the responses that you are going to get on this forum is 5.13 for 35s and auto. That is what I did with my old JK and I kinda went back and forth with liking it and not. Off road, it is a fantastic ratio and made a huge difference. In fact, it felt more punchy that my stock 2012 with stock tires. BUT you will feel like you are a little high in RPM while on the freeway. The 3.8 is actually comfortable in the mid RPM range though, so you aren't destroying your engine or anything.
My best advice, go out and actually measure your tire. If you have tall heavy 35s like interco or Toyos, then jump up to 5.13s But if you have smallish 35s that are lighter weight, like the Duratracs or Kelly Safaris, then you would probably be happier with the 4.88s. You would be surprised how many 35's actually measure under a 34

How fast do you want to drive on the freeway? Around here it is mostly 60-65 and with an auto and 4.88s the rpm is about 1900 which is pretty low, so it still shifts out of overdrive a lot. I have MTR-Ks in 315/70-17 and wish my gears were 5.13. I actually think the gas mileage might be a little better due to less downshifting. If my freeway driving was at 70-75 the 4.88s would be about right.

I have a 07, auto, 35,s and 5.13. If I would do it again, it would be the same 5.13. I'm ok cause I dont plan to lock front. I think 5.13 + dana30 + locker is something that will blow...
At highway I do not have that downshit anymore. I drive at 60 to 70 and get around 2300rpm... I feel confortable. I dont have a sport car to go faster than that... So, ok for me...
