Hey guys... having a debate with myself over tire sizes. I want to go to a 33 in tire, but I can't decide between the tall and skinny look vs the fat tire look. Does anyone have any pros and cons comparisons between these tire sizes: 255/80/17 and 285/70/17. Thoughts or opinions? Thanks!

 

Personally, I prefer the look of the 285/70/17.

What tire are you looking at? The only one I've found in 255-80-17 is the BFG KM2. Personally, I think the stock width is fine but I'd like a tire just a little taller. I wish they had an all terrain in 255-80-17.

 

I'm in the same boat as you I like the tall skinny look, but there few tire companies that sell the 255/80/R17 tires. I'm sure the 255 would be a little less stable vs the 285 but I cant see how it would be more "tippy" then the stock tire. The 255 should go better in the snow and in heavy rain but then again it does depend on the tread design of the tire.

For me I'll more then likely go to the 285 just because of the tire choice alone.

 

I ended up getting 295/70/17s, but might get the 255/80/17 BFG MTs in the future. Fills out the wheel well but probably better MPGs. Pizza cutters look cool...

The only company that carries the 255/80/17 is BFG and only in the MT. The good thing is, its considerably less expensive, better for mud (famous in Charleston), better in MPGs and lighter. I would throw some spacers on to kick the stance a little wider and that will take care of tippyness, and it is perfect for a stock rim. I just haven't yet seen the 255/80 in person. I've seen a ton of pics for each, but that's not enough for me just yet.

 

I have the 255-85-16 BFG KM2's on my ZJ and I like the way they fit and look. I would rather have an all-terrain for my daily driver though. I was hoping you knew of any other brands that carry that size.
