Rubicon axel questions
Will the D44 on the rubi accept air lockers like ARB if so will it still work with the dash light and switch. How many spline is the stock axels and can it be upgraded with the current e-locker? I know i can get moly axels but im wondering how to get to 35 spline while my still using stock elockers..is that possable
I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure if you change to an air locker it would consist of hooking it up like you would on any jeep. You would need a compressor and all the goodies. I doubt the factory with would work with it, and if you could get it to work...don't think it would be worth the hassle.
I know the tj rubicon came with arb and there is lights in the control panel that lets you know which lockers are engaged or trying to engage etc. So I would like to know 1) if any one has used arb lockers in the new gen d44 axel and 2) can it still use the dash lights?
Lots of questions I hope I can answer some if not all of them:
first yes you can get a ARB for the rubi D44 (part #RD157)
second this locker requiers new 35 spline axle shafts, not sure what the factory spline count is but it isn't 35 spline.
third the rubi D44 housing is differant than standard D44 which this locker is designed spacifically to fit in the Rubi D44 axle housing. Also it is designed to use the Rubi gears which are differant than standard D44 gears, most axles have a range where there is a splits for differant gear raitos which determans which carrier you need but the Rubi D44 uses the same carrier for all gear raitos.
Next, you may be able to get your factory switches to work depending on how good you are at with 12vDC wiring. It would require splicing into the factory harness and then into the ARB harness. My suggestion would be to find a new home the switches and then use the factory switches for lights or other stuff.
As far as getting 35 spline axles in your E-lockers that would be a big no unless they are already 35 spline but then there wouldn't be a real need to upgrade them. But I wouldn't count on them being 35 spline because ARB says that you'll need new axle shafts for their locker.
I don't have ARB's in my JK yet but have a few freinds that do and haven't had any problems with them. I've got ARB's in my XJ for 10 years now and haven't had any problems with them other than a wire coming loose from the switch which caused my lockers not to work.
I've talked to the ARB guys on the phone a couple time and they are all very knowledgable about their products and vehicle aplications for them. It might be worth your time to give them a call, I would bet they could tell you what the spline count is on the stock Rubi axles too.
