Im thinking of training in my 2010 4 door for a 2012 2 door. I don't have kids or pets and my back seat is only used 3% of the time. I'd get better gas mileage, and more power with less weight. It's also cheaper than the 4 door.
What are the downsides to a 2 door, besides the difference in cargo space? Any more advantages other than what I already listed?

2 door is harder to high-center (better break-over angle).
4 door has a higher towing capacity.
4 door might be better for resale given that most people tend to buy them.
2 door is cheaper if you want soft or tube doors since you only need 2 instead of 4. Also, 2 less doors to store when you take the hard doors off.
4 door without a back seat has a significant storage space advantage for camping and carrying gear.
2 door will look a bit more "classic" and is less common than 4 door.
Edit: like any vehicle, there are units that have problems. I wouldn't let it scare you. The Pentastar is a hell of a great power advantage and the vast majority of them are running just fine, putting huge smiles on their owner's faces daily.
BTW... I have a 2012 two door on order!

I absolutely love my 2012 4 door. I've got about 5100 problem free miles so far. You may want to think about your life and how you may use it in a few years. Kids or dogs in your future? Camping? How hard core do you off road. I would go with the 4 door unless initial cost and break over obstacles are your biggest factors. I would not let quality concerns stop you from getting a 2012. These forums naturally have people gravitate to them if they have problems so you may see a disproportionate amount of complaints here.
I love my 2012 JKU...I think biggest advantage is obviously the longer wheel, I go up some pretty steep stuff that guys with 2-door are scared of...this can also be a disadvantage though as you can more easily find yourself high center...
Only a few thousand $ difference, for me it's why wouldn't you get a 4-door?
Also, I would think resale value on the 4-door is a lot higher as there would be more demand for them over the 2-door.

Off road, I think a 4DR lifted Jeep with 35's might be a little better then a 2DR lifted Jeep with 35's.
the 2DR has advantages as does the 4DR, even though I own a 2DR and have no experience with a 4DR I would probably say the 4DR might have the slight advantage... given equal lift and tire size.
I thing my 2DR is great but have wished I had more crago space many times...
If I were to trade, I'd probably go to a 4DR.
of course alot of this depends how you off road. So far I like it all, rocks, mountain passes, moab... etc.... I also like to camp... thus more cargo... 3 people and gear is very tight in the 2DR.

Thanks all. I think I've made up my mind. Now I just need to figure out if I should get a Sport, and buy pr44 or just get the rubicon. Ugh..!! Decisions decisions!

I decided on a 2 door rubi. It's being built now. Even if I have one or two small kids who cares they can still fit in the back seat. I like the smaller vehicle. Looks much better in person than the 4 door IMO. I still like the 4 doors it's just not for me.
