Default Expert please explain: Difference between 4" lift and 2.5" with 1.5" body lift

Monday evening post Laker loss quiz........

I was curious about what the true difference is?

A 4" coil lift vs a 2.5" coil plus a 1.5" body boost?

I see plenty of great looking jeeps both ways.

Is the major difference the need for new drive shaft with the 4"?

2011 unlimited with 35" tires.

The difference is the 4 inch coil lift is all coils while the mixup is some coil and some boost. You already know the difference, I just reiterated it to you from your post.

And you don't need to replace your driveshaft, you can just let it fail

The coil lift raises your components out of harms way where as a body lift just helps to get more clearance for your tires while leaving a gap between body and frame

I think what the OP is asking...

With the 4" lift a new DS should be on order...

With a 2.5" coil lift and 1.5" BL, would this affect the driveline the same way a direct 4" coil lift would? Does this style (coil/body combo) require a DS purchase??

A 2.5 lift requires a front driveshaft if you disconnect both a friend and I are at that point both running 2.5 lift and his is a 2 door mine is a 4.

4" is A LOT of lift for just 35's and i would not recommend going that route unless you were planning on running 37's. in addition to throwing your COG off, to do 4" right requires a lot more components to get your suspension and steering dial in and that's to help keep your driving/riding nicely ON PAVEMENT.

also, so that it's clear, it's not the lift height that will make you need or not need a new drive shaft but rather, it's the shock length you run and the amount of droop they will give you that will make the difference. even with a 2.5" coil lift, if you run long enough shocks, you will still need a new front drive shaft if you have a 2012 or an 07-11 automatic.

that means you are either running factory shocks, factory shocks with extensions or, aftermarket shocks that are short enough to prevent your driveshaft from making contact. your lift height has no bearing in this matter.

I totally agree. I was running the 2.5" TF coil with 9550 shocks, not disconnected. When I finally replaced my DS I had a nice ring around it. It was just starting to spit oil. I've since added 1" spacers, so I felt it was only a matter of time before failure.

Thank you for the clarification. I was also wondering about this.
