I am changing my 3.21's to 3.73's. I don't have many mechanic shops around my hometown that can do it, so, I asked my dealer for an estimate on a gear swap. He just turned over to his little calculator and punched in 15 hrs at $95.00 an hr. WHAT AN ESTIMATE!!!!! I have called around home and even called a Jeep dealer in Lafayette, La, and they said they don't even do that there. I used to be a mechanic a few years ago, and I made estimates from a labor book and that's what I got paid. I really don't see it taking 15 hrs to swap my gears. Any suggestions? Does anyone know someone around Houma, La that could change them out? I really don't have the tools to do it myself, and really don't want the headache.

 

Im pretty sure it should only take 5 hours for both axles. I've watched ppl strip their ring gear and pull it on out on the trail. Try and find your local off road shop.

 

Any small shop can do it for you.... nothing special with jeep gears, just bring them the part and tell them install it...

While you are swapping, why not go at least 4:10? I had a JK with 3:73 with 35s now have a Rubi with 4:10 and 35s and it's a huge difference. Jane got 17.8 mpg on my last road trip. Just my 2 cents.

 

I was gonna say, why not just get 4.10 or higher if you are running bigger tires?

 

Forgot to say that I have a 2011 Sport. But, I do feel like 15 hrs is way too much. I was told that the last Wrangler they changed them on was a pain in the rear. Something about the sensors on the axel? I really don't understand any of it.

 

I have Goodyear 285/70/17 MT/R with Kevlar. 33" Tires. My Jeep is my work and play vehicle. so I will be on the highway more then offroading.

 

Shouldn't matter if its a 2dr or 4dr 2011 or 2007 or even if its a 1997 ford escape , its the rear diff gears and it shouldn't take more than 2-3 hour for each. plus $95 an hour is an a$$ rape

Take it to any local shops and see what they say.

 

My gears were done in 8 hours at about $60/hour.

 

Try Searchers in Prairieville or Light Line in Baton Rouge. If they do not do it Im sure they can refer you to someone that can.
