Default Mounting winch to JEEP steel front bumper

Hi Guys,

I have been a Jeep owner since I learned to drive and this is my third Wrangler. 09 Sahara JK 2 Door.

Cant thank everyone enough for the info people have posted on these forums which has helped me complete everything from the dash cluster painting to extending my breather lines and installing my own ring and pinion set.

Due to the laws in Dubai, UAE. Modified bumpers need a manufacturers/dealership certificate for registration and legal road running. Because of this, I installed my 2.5" kit and got my Jeep dealership to install the Jeep steel front and rear bumper with tire carrier. Unfortunately the Jeep bumper has no area for mounting a winch plate due to the small space between the top of the bumper and the bottom of the 2.5" bull bar (See photos for my jeep and the bumper).

I was wondering if anyone has this bumper and has managed to cut a space for a winch by cutting the section on top of the bumper to fit a winch plate and winch and a space in the front to put a winch fairlead?

I would replace the entire bumper set with a stubby bumper and RR rear with tire carrier but it is a bit on the expensive side and like making things my own when I can.

If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

For my Jeep, if anyone is interested, she is modded with the following:

2009 Black JK 2door
2.5" Mopar lift
33" Mickey Thompson Tires
17" Mickey Thompson wheels
1.5" wheel spacers
Ring and Pinion 4.88
Re-bar on axles for strengthening
Extended breather lines
Jeep steel front and rear bumper
K&N Cold Air induction kit
Diablosport trinity ECU tuner
Performance spark plugs
Throttle body spacer
Gibson dual tip exhaust Cat back system
Smoked taillights and turn signals
Headlight, taillight, indicator armour
Stubby aerial
Spare tire spade holder
RR bonnet lifters
Daystar hood latches
RR fuel door
Drilled side mirrors
Flipped mirror
Custom sound system (Focal)
Xenon headlights/high beams
LED interior lights/running lights
50% Black tint
Black neoprene seat covers
Custom black painted everything I can

Lots more mods to come

Welcome to the forum.
Really nice set up you have there. What time is it where you are? Any ways, with out replacing the entire bumper and not knowing the laws there I would say it would be best to have it professionally installed to the bumber on there. I have seen guys with buber that look very similar to yours with winches mounted. As the day goes on I am sure some one will have an idea for you.

Not sure how yours is mounted but this one has a 2x2 probably 1/4 thick bar that mounts between the frame rails for support of the winch.

That is exactly what I was looking for keithsfd7! Could you tell me how you did it?

What did you use to cut the bumper and any special mounting plate for the winch?
What winch are you using by the way, and anything for the fairlead that I should know?

Looks perfect!

The bumper is available from the factory with the winch mount. I have the model without the winch mount, but the guy I bought it from was selling it because he wanted the one with the winch mount.

Ah ok, Thanks Bradt65, I thought I might have to cut the bumper myself and drill in a mounting bracket to hold one.

Ill have a look and chat with the dealer and my mates who have gear when I'm back home (away on business now) and see if I can replace my bumper. Definitely need a winch for the off road driving, desert sand here has a tendency to hold you back!
Ill do a bit of research to have a look at the mounting and space for whichever winch I can get in there.

Thanks again

If you do not want to purchase a new bumper... Buy a simple flat winch plate (harbor freight has a good one in the USA, take a look online and source something similar out your way) and the mount it on the underside of the frame rails. You might have to trim the bumper some and work the plate a little depending on what you can get but all that would not be visable from the top. This will allow the winch to mount between the frame rails and then you just need to open up a spot on the front of the bumper to connect the rollers.

Thanks mate,

will have a look at the bumper mounting when I get back and see what I can do to custom fit a winch in there. If not I'll source a MOPAR bumper with winch mount. like the idea of doing it on my own though, also like the look of the fairleads rather than rollers but thats just me, would rather function over form anyway so I'll see what I can do.
