Default Tire carrier

How big of a tire can you carry on the stock tire carrier without doing damage to the tailgate or hinges? I'm running 295/70/17 (33.8") tire on a 17x9 pro comp 1059 wheel.

I have had a 315/70/17 on mine for 4 years. It fits into the rear bumper like a glove, holds the tire up. I also have the MBPR reinforcing kit. No problems whatsoever; no rattles no sagging.

I just put the same size tires on mine Friday so it looks like my next mod will be something like the reinforcing kit till I can scrounge up $1k for a rear bumper and tire carrier.

I know Bestop offers a cost effective rear tire carrier attachment - but not real excited about drilling a bunch of holes in my 2012 JK just yet.

I'd suggest adding a set of Daystar bumpstops or extending your OEM bumpstops so they touch the spare tire. I've read members sliding a piece of radiator/heator hose inside the OEM bumpstops to make an extension.

I've got a bumper/tire carrier now but thinking I was thinking of doing away with the carrier but I guess I'll just keep it the way it is.
