Would you run Steelies if it saved you $300.. would like feed back
OK.. Im sold on 15x8 wheel and GY Duratracs for a 2012 auto, 3.73
the wheels I'm trying to narrow down and see if its worth it. So bear with me on this... and please, I would like feedback.
Stock configuration with 17s and GY SRA = 63lbs
MB TKO and GY Dura = 68lbs
Summit D's and GY Dura = 77lbs
Now out the door price from DTD on the TKO and GY was $1575, AFTER REBATES ..
$1365
Now SUMMIT D's and GY from DTD… $1250, AFTER REBATES
$1040
So a savings of $325
BUT… I would have to mount and balance my own tires (i would do that), possibly grind the calipers, and plasti-dip the wheel..i like the flat look better.
So all that and then take the weight difference… think that $325 savings is worth it? one part of me says yes, cause then what I save I can buy ACE sliders, the other says F*#K NO… get that shipped to your door already to mount and drive, and only going up 5lbs instead of 14lbs…

Yes, you are a bit too concerned with the weight difference. the real question to ask on steel vs. aluminum wheels is what type of wheeling do you do. Are you likely to do rock crawling where the wheels get beat up and dropped off boulders? If so, steel is usually a better option since people claim you can hammer them back into shape where aluminum cracks. If you are doing sand, dirt, mud wheeling....really doesn't matter. If your jeep won;t see any off-roading...leave it stock...

Do what you can afford. If you are trying to save money save it and don't get something that you can't afford.
But if you have the money get what works and looks cool.
That much weight is not going to matter. I would think that a 35 inch tire for a 17inch rim would be lighter because it has less rubber but I'm no expert.

When I get a chance to wheel, I go for rocks, creek beds... Trail stuff.

But I've read so much on unsprung weight and affecting mpg... I've became paranoid ... Lol
In all honesty, the stock wheels w/ Rubi tires are @ 75lbs. So I would be in that ballpark.
That would be a 15lb increase from stock.
It gets driven daily ... While mpg is important, I can accept a couple of MPG lost.

if you have a discount tire in your local area you can have that shop order the tires (and maybe even get a better price thats whats on the discount direct webpage) and they will balance them on the Summit D wheels (that you would provide) and even move your TMPS over for you...

rule of thumb evey 10 pounds you add to rotational mass is equivilent to 100lb's of extra weight inside your jeep, 40lb of extra wheels tires = one big fat guy in your passenger seat (or 3 hot girls if your like that way better

I would go with alloys, even if it costs more. They weigh less and IMHO look better. They also won't rust. You will accelerate better on lighter wheels, and it will return better gas mileage. There is a reason why race cars choose the lightest wheel possible. I understand that adding weight is part of modding a JK, but this weight is totally unnecessary. The lighter you are the better.
