Default Second battery yet? Here's my idea...

After seeing dsy's Engel fridge install...

I was thinking of doing the same, but mounting the fridge a little higher, and stuffing an Optima yellow top under there (mounted sideways).

What do you guys think? It's the only place I can find so far for a second battery...

How would you manage the two batteries? I currently have an Optima yellow top under the hood, with winch, lights, etc. and the standard 160A alternator. Engel offers a battery monitoring system that will turn off the fridge is power drops bellow 10-11A (configurable). So maybe I should just wire both batteries together and not manage them at all?

Is there something special I should know about connecting two batteries together? Should I add a breaker or relay, or something?

Thanks,
js.

My idea for a second under hood battery has been to remove the factory air box and put it there and use a cone/round style filter right on the intake with a shield on the bottom side.

By "mounted sideways" I hope you dont mean you plan to lay it on it's side...

Optima batteries can be mounted in any orientation because of their dry cell construction.

Why not throw them both in the trunk? Why take up seat room?

I could put the dog in a crate & fridge next to it, but then couldn't access the cubby storage. We usually leave the back seats folded, so loosing 1/3rd is no big deal.
