Tips for obx
Make sure to air down your tires some. They do not have air stations (at least that i remember) so a portable compressor to air back up would be helpful.
You will be fine in 4wd high. Just don't try to stop or take off quick. You will visually be able to see where the sand is soft and then closer to the water it is more compacted and easier to drive in. It is a good idea to carry a shovel, tow strap and a platform for a jack in case you get stuck. The police patrol the beach. Roads are marked if they are closed and the dunes are off limits. Have fun.

I am down here in Waves this week and have been on the beach a couple of times. Never have had any problem finding a place to air back up on HI. I air down to 24 or so and no problems, with the sand being wet it's been helping.
If you drive in Corolla you don't need to air Dow as you may see some front wheel drive vehicles on the beaches. There is an air station about 1 mile on the paved road. If you go to Oregon Inlet you have to pay, the sand is fluffy here take a strap but you should be good if you air down. There is a pump station about 500 yards from the entrance. Hatteras and south is more remote but nothing for a jeep and the tips above

One thing you might get/bring is a yard sprinkler one that goes back and forth. When you get off the sand stick it under your rig, move it every 10-15 minutes till the whole underside is done then move 90' to get good overlap. That should get all the sand and salt off the under carriage.

If you are a foodie, hit up Awful Arhtur's (across from Avalon Pier) and Jolly Rogers for breakfast...good stuff. You really don't need to airdown since you are going up in Corolla, wouldn't hurt if you did but not necessary.
