How to change Thermostat...
A little more on the topic. Reducing the operating temp of an engine with a cooler thermostat is a throwback to carbs. It can work with EFI, though there is a lot more to consider. Bottom line, you have to know at what temp the ECU goes into closed loop. If stock is a 195 thermostat, it probably goes into closed loop somewhere around there, maybe at 190 or so. If you run too cool a thermostat, and you adust the fan to come on appropriately, then the engine will run cooler, but will never allow the ECU to go from open to closed loop. Result is loss in performance and increased fuel mileage. If one of the programmers out there compensate for this temperature change, i.e. tell the computer to go into closed loop around 180, then the lower temp thermostat (along with reprogrammed fan switch) will result in better performance and probably an unnoticeable change in fuel mileage. I run a Hypertech programmer, and I know you can reprogram the fan switch, but I'm not sure if that selection also adjusts the feedback loop. I would recommend, unless you are running a stand alone ECU and programming it yourself (or having someone do it), leave the theromostat and fan switch temp stock. The 3.8 just isn't worth the investment in time and money to pull out a few extra hp in such an envolved method. If underhood temps are a concern, then a solution such as venting the hood is the way to go. If overheating is the problem, identify the cause and repair it. If the cause is an insufficient cooling system because you are running it hard in very high temps or you want to improve cooling ability, then look into a bigger radiator, better fan/shroud setup, or a higher pressure radiator cap.
Wow, a lot of good information.. thanks... but yeah the flashpaq will let u control when to turn on the fan and such.. main reason I wanted to swap thermostats, is that I bought my jeep with a jet stage 2 chip and it requires 93 octane and a 180 thermostat...
