Hi,
I really need locker for my dry camping trips.
If I intall a D30 front auto-locker like detroit will it engage in the streets if I keep it in just RWD mode?
Thank you and sorry if its a dumb question.

I have an Aussie locker up front in my Dana 30 and to be honest, it drives me crazy. As far as the general driving aspect goes, it's almost invisible, but when it comes to making really tight turns in such places like parking lots, the binding is awful. Unfortunately that's the nature of the beast, but it's rather embarrassing when people look at you in a new 30+ thousand dollar rig and it sounds like the front end is falling apart.
I'm considering pulling it out and installing a selectable locker.
However, it's works great when it comes to offroad performance.

I put a Yukon Grizzly locker in my front. They are built better that Detroit and have a warranty. Invisible in 2wd even making tight turns. Hit 4 hi or 4 low and it is awesome.
Just a note. This is an AUTO locker. So no wires, air lines, or cables are needed to actuate. It does NOT make noise when you are driving in 2WD, nor does it bind making turns like an Aussie locker. I am very pleased with the Auto locker. Aside from the fact that mine actuates in 4HI...something a rubicon can't.
One thing you need to consider when getting auto locker is that it actuates when TORQUE is applied to the front drive shaft. So regardless it will lock in 4wd. A selectable will allow you to run 4wd with a open diff in the front for better control on snow/icy roads. I don't find that a problem, but some may. Overall if I have to choose a locker again, it would be the same Yukon Grizzly locker since they have a warranty PLUS 2 grand in damage if their product fails. No other manufacturer has a warranty like that.
