I'm running 3" on my 08, zero problems on my front d/s so far. If you're pre-2012, you'll be fine at 3" and under.

I go a 2.5 now but I have had a 5" laying at the house for year an a half and I'm getting the itch to put It on and was wondering if I could run stock shafts for a few weeks till I could get new ones

I'm running a 4" lift with 1.75" coil spacer and 1.25 body lift on my 2008 2door for over two years now. No problems on road or off. I mainly off-road in a sand dune area called red sands. Everyone said I had to change my drive shafts ASAP. I will, soon as I see a problem.

The only right answer is it depends. I put 40k miles on my last JKU with 4" of lift and stock shafts. Both spline boots were torn or partially missing, but the pinion boots never tore, so I never needed to replace the shafts.
