But first i have some questions .... Smittybilt says the x02 winch is waterproof , is this only necessary if i plan on going thru deep water ? ( i don't ) aren't all winches somewhat water proof , also wire vs rope.... , will synthetic rope break down from the uv in sunlight , i only want a winch for emergencies , i like the idea of the ease with rope , but since i live in a climate with lots of uv , i'm afraid it will break down the rope when i really need it most . Any and all thoughts on winches would be welcome , i think i would like to not spend more that 600.00 or so ..... Any thoughts ?

I've got a Smittybuilt X20 Comp 10,000 for around $600. The synthetic is the way to go, no matter what winch you choose.

 

I have been rocking a synthetic for about a year and a half and have had no issues. Love it so much better. No rust!

 

I actually was considering the engo and of course the xo2 , do you have to keep the rope always covered in the texas sun ?

I have the Smitybilt XRC8 Comp (synthetic rope). The rope is better for many reasons:
#1 easier to handle
#2 less weight to carry on the front end
#3 if the rope breaks it will just fall to the ground, if cable breaks it becomes a giant whip and could hurt/kill you or others and possibly damage surrounding rigs.
#4 it floats so you can just throw the hook on the end of the line as far as possible and walk through as little mud/water as possible to get to shore, the hook will sink but you can easily pick up the floating rope and save yourself from walking though 100ft of mud

The x2o winch is completely water proof. So that leads me to believe that even if the winch is completely submerged you could still operate the winch with out failure to electrical components of the winch. I have not tested this but I believe that is the purpose.

Btw I have a warn x8000i (that has long been discontinued) I've owned it for 15 years it's been abused on 4 different jeeps and rebuilt 2 twice ( did I say I abused it ) I have steel cable but if I do ever need too change it I'll go synthetic
