Default New Wheels/tires advice

OK, I need a little help with picking out a new wheel/tire combo on my stock 2dr sport. here are my wants:

- 16in black wheels
- cant afford a lift so sticking with 33in tires (I'm told i cant get away with 35's)
- ultimately looking a nice wider stance
- My jeep is my daily driver so it has to be something practical, i was thinking A/T's
- when i do go offroading its mostly backwoods/mudding
- budget is coming in around ~$500 for the wheels/~$800 for the tires

One concern of mine is the tire sensors on the stock setup, what exactly do i need to do to not screw all of that up?

Can I make this happen? if not, i'm going to go broke with this friggin jeep the way i keep finding new things i want to do to it!

I went with Raceline raptor 981's and 265/75-16 tires and am happy with the outcome. they are only 32" but I have 3.21 gears so best comprimise for me. Any tire shop can swap the sensors no problem

Keeping budget in mind you will probably want to go with a steel wheel. They are cheap but heavy. If you go with the steel wheels then you will probably have a little extra to spend on the tires. Another great thing about the steel wheels is that if you are rock crawling and the lip of the wheel catches the edge of a rock it will bend but not break. At that point just a few hits with a hammer and your back in business. If you have aluminum wheels you run the chance of breaking the outer lip off the wheel and rendering the wheel useless. You also would need to send the wheel out to someone to be repaired. Aluminum wheels also gouge and over time will look pretty beat up. Not to mention the price of aluminum wheels is a little on the high side.

As far as tires go you will want to look at 285/75/16. There are a bunch of good tires in this size but to keep it with in your budget you will want to look at the Kumho Road Venture AT KL78, Yokohama Geolander A/T-S, General Grabber AT 2, or Firestone Destination A/T.

If I were looking at the tires listed about I would pick the Firestone Destination A/T.

Hope this helps you out!

Get some wheels from a Rubicon for cheap and run wider tires.
Add spacers to your current wheels and just get some tires. Used spacers can be had for cheap.

Go with Level 8 trackers. $110 from Discount Tire. They didn't crack when they went through rocks. Only ground off a bit of metal from the lip.

For AT tires I'd get Duratracs. But it's going to be above your budget. I don't think you gonna find 5 tires for $800 anyway. Even in 15" wheel diameter.

You don't need the sensors. Simply get a Procal and disable them.

Yes, you will eventually go broke. It will not end with just tires and wheels. If you want to keep your money, sell your Jeep. There is no way around it. Sorry.

I was/am in a similiar situation (realize this thread is a month old). I was shopping on Amazon, can get 285/75/16's Falken wild country's shipped free for 179 ea..but i'd need to get them mounted/balanced. Found a local store with the same dimension General AT2's for 215 installed...think I'll go generals mostly due to the fact its a local store and they give free lifetime rotations. (score IMO, hard for me to get free time a lot of the time for these lil chores)

* the local store will also price match, so gonna dig up the cheapest price I can find on em before heading in to get them.

So those wheels from discount tire have been good quality for the price?

Look for a take off set of Rubicon wheels, tires, suspension... A lot of people buy new Rubs and lift them. I've got a set off my 13 JKUR but I'm in North Idaho and they are the gunmetal color. Take a look on ebay.
