Default mounting gas / jerry can

im looking for a good place to install jerry cans. the wife wants to start exploring death valley and i would like to not get stuck out there. i dont want to buy a new bumper just to stick some cans up there. nor do i want to over pay for those new center mounting cans. i dont know how much the door will hold. looked at a I RACK from smitybuilt but i already have a 33 on a steel wheel can the back door take that much? any ideas on a DIY or a cheaper way of mounting gas cans?

How about a hitch mounted trailer basket? Would limit you a little but it would work without being too expensive and no modification.

That would work only if driving smooth roads. But after one cross ditch this basket will blow to pieces. And forget about doing any serious off roading. I wonder if it's OK to just put gas cans inside. Anyone doing that?

I wouldn't want to carry this in the jeep. If the gas tank(s) happened to start leaking, where would the gas go?

I'm on the same boat but decided against carrying any extra fuel. It's just cheaper to spend a buck more a gallon and refuel in Panamint Springs or Furnace Creek.

Why would it leak, given you use good, quality cans?

This was the cheapest solution I found. Rotopax on a bracket that goes through your center cap and bolts to the spare lugs.

I would only do so if I'm leaving a window open for ventilation. Otherwise, it needs to be outside. Fumes get pretty bad. I was almost at the point a few years ago of pouring out close to 5 gallons due to the fumes. However a co-worker came by and I tossed it in the back of his truck. I had a 8 hour drive ahead of me and wasn't willing to spend 2+ hours with the fumes before using enough gas so I could use the jerry can.

Something I'm wondering about is a Teraflex tire carrier then have a buddy fab up something that allows me to carry a can on either side of the spare. Before I'd never consider it due to the weight... but with the TF carrier, the weight is off the door and on to the tub.

ive seen these but there not cheap. you can find a jerry can for $35 at 5 gallon and up those start at $60ish at 3 gallon and still hanging from the door. so whats a 33 on steel with 3-6 gallons put on that back door. thats what im wondering will that door take the stress?
