Which is the best wheel for the best price??
Past couple days I've been doing a lot of research on lifts, tires, and rims and decided on a 4" lift with 35s on a 17x9 rim just asking around for suggestions on tires. GO!
Well I have a 2011 wrangler unlimited with only 8000 miles in it and bought it new, it's not my DD so I don't need a tire that would last as long as someone who does DD with their vehicle. Also I don't want to spend crazy amounts of money because I don't do any crazy off roading.
Ok i'm having a hard time understanding what this Jeep is going to be. So it is or is not a daily driver? Do you have any preference on what type of tire, mud or all terrain tire? As far as wheels go, as long as the wheels are the right size and offset then just pick whatever you like. Honestly they are wheels, they are mostly about style. That is assuming that you aren't doing beadlocks. Most people like Toyo's, Nitto's, BFG's and Goodyear's it seems like. But its one of those things, like lifts, that none are really "bad" but everyone has their personal favorite.
IMO if you want to go off road then run a steel wheel. It's much cheaper (although heavier) and the lip will not break if you slide off a rock and catch it, the lip will bend but it won't render the wheel useless because you can just use a BFH (big ****** hammer) to fix it.
An aluminum wheel could crack and render the wheel useless. If you bend an aluminum wheel it will most likely need to be replaced or repaired by a wheel repair shop. They are typically lighter and more stylish so if you don't plan on going off road then the aluminum wheel might be a better choice.
I can't comment on any tire other than a mud terrain as I haven't driven on an all terrain tire since I was 17. I have driven on a bunch of mud terrains over the years and can tell you my opinion of a few of them on and off road.
Here I go:
Dunlop Mud Rover :
On the road - Fairly noisy, but not the worst I have driven. Not very good in the rain (although not many mud tires are but this one was especially bad). Decent in the snow, the tread pattern would get clogged depending on the type of snow and would lose traction at that point. Drove totally fine on a dry road.
Off road - I didn't really play on the rocks much with these tires but what I do remember wasn't anything special. In the mud I never got stuck, and they throw mud everywhere.
Would I buy it again? No
Firestone Destination MT:
On the road - LOUD!!! Other than that not a bad tire.
Off road - Again I mostly took this tire through the mud and down fire roads but it wasn't bad.
Would I buy it again? No
Yokohama Geolander MT:
On the road - Noise isn't a huge issue on this tire. It performs well in all ways except for in reverse in the snow and mud. The tire is directional so it does not like to be driven backwards.
Off road - Has nice side biters so it makes for climbing sides of embankments fairly easy. It forms around the rocks nicely even with 25lbs of air. But again the tire does not like to go backwards at all.
Would I buy it again? No
BFG KM2:
On the road - fairly quite and performs well in all conditions.
Off road - climbs over every rock we put in front of it. Rides walls nice due to side biters, excellent in the mud. Overall a very good off road tire.
Would I buy it again: Yes
