Default Gearing question, ratios are not making sense

Okay, So im moving up to 35s in the next few weeks. I noticed alot of people recommending 5:13s, Now my JKU came from the factory on 32s and 3:73s, was factory gearing way under cut? according to a genaric calculator it says my Gearing to go back to current state should be 4:10s? if thats the case wouldnt 5:13s be way to tall for DD use?

What transmission do you have?

I'm on 35s with 5.13 gears and the 3.8l with automatic transmission. It varies which engine and tranny you have as well.

I was researching the same tire change and with the auto trams it seems the 5:13s are the way to go. Everyone with their manual tranny Rubicon are typically able to run their 4:10s just fine they just adjust their shift timing.

Do you have a 2012+ or a 2007-2011?

Is it an automatic or manual?

If 2007-2011 automatic: a lot of people go with 5.13, at highway speeds it is pretty decent and not too high in the RPMs, nice around town

if 2007-2011 manual: I hear of a lot of people sticking with stock (3.73 or 4.10) or going to 4.56, with 4.10 seeming to be the sweet spot with 4.56 being a bit of a lower gearing from what I gather.

if 2012-current automatic: 3.73 should be just fine for 35's, ideally 4.10's would be the sweet spot.

if 2012-current manual: I believe 4.10s are the sweet spot here for the manuals as well, with 4.56 being a smidge high.

These are rough guesstimates. For more information check out this post:

(scroll down until you see the charts) These should give you some handy information on all of it.

On my '12 automatic, 3.6L , 35" --
The 4.1 gear ratio is good. On roads the overdrive kicks in, and there's plenty of power for offroading.
I wouldn't go beyond 4.56, unless it's for extended slow technical offroading.

Christarp said it best: Depends what year and transmission you have.

Also consider the bigger tire will jump in weight, especially due to added width. You can't just consider the gain in height.

I agree also with Christarp. However make sure to consider the real purpose for your regear. I went to 35's and 4:88's here in Ohio on my DD. I use it a lot in SE Ohio which is pretty hilly as well as toe my 8x12 ATV trailer without any issues at all. W/O toeing my trailer, down shifting for the hills is very rare. Toeing my trailer, loaded, I can hold 65 all da long. I also get really decent milage. If your wanting to maintain factory to near factory RPM's, milage, etc, then 4:56's are the way to go.
Good luck with whatever way you chose.
