Default What is a "tuner" in terms of Intake/Exhaust

I was scrolling through the forum looking at threads and came across a thread I did not understand. In terms of intake/exhaust, I read that you need a "tuner" to get the best sound. What is a tuner? I'm not incredibly knowledgeable about vehicles and am in the process of learning. Any help would be appreciated.

I assume they mean a programmer. Like SuperChips or BullyDog

Programmers will lean out the air/fuel ratio, which does change the sound a little

I've never heard of anyone using a tuner to change sound before. Typically what happens is people buy an intake and exhaust, therefore they have increased the engines ability to suck in air and expell it. So then they use a tuner to reflash the ECM with settings to take advantage of the greater air quantity. This in turn creates more power and I guess as a by product could change the sound. But like I said, I have never heard of anyone using a tuner to specifically change exhuast note or "sound".

Thank you for the responses. Since you guys put it in terms I could understand, I was able to figure out the thread. Would you guys advise getting a chip after the intake and exhaust were added. Is it a necessity or something you can do without for awhile?

Its not a bad idea if you have the money to do it, but it definitely wont hurt you if you don't. Most people in the Jeep world use the tuners more to adjust for bigger tires and other benefits.

Expect very little performance gain wise from an intake and exhaust. That being said, the tuner will help get a little more power from the engine depending on the tune. Honestly, every little bit helps when trying to get power out of these things, but don't expect to be blown away after draining your wallet on a few bolt ons

The biggest benefit is adjusting automatic transmission shift points and the speedometer for bigger tires. There might be small gains in horsepower and mpg from more aggressive air/fuel ratios and advancing spark timing if you want to run higher octane gas. Gears and superchargers are the only mods that will make a real difference short of a motor swap.

Thank you guys for the information. My wife has approved the Volant CAI and the Magnaflow axle back dual exhaust. I guess I'm going to have to try to squeeze a little bit more out of her for the chip since I am eventually putting larger tires on.
