Its tax return time and I am trying to smooth the misses over on a set of gears and an install. Little background, I have an 09 auto jku dana 30/44 on 35s and live in florida. No mountains here just flat roads and I do an equal amount of highway and street driving. I do wheel and as I get closer to paying off the jeep I intend to wheel a little harder. I don't plan on swapping out my dana 30 unless it fails then I will replace with a 44. I do want to run a locker up front and will probably go with an aussie. Does anyone have regrets going with 4.88s and wish they went with 5.13s? Just want to make sure I make the right choice since I will only being doing it once. Thanks

I'm from Florida as well and would never need that type of gearing. I think 4.88's would be more than enough.

If I could go back I would have went with 5.13 but i live in CO. I think you'll be fine with 4.88 since you're on flat land and sea level. At 75 mph I'm taching at 3K with 35s.

Edit- I have the six speed manual.

Yeah, no need for 5.13 unless you plan on changing your style drastically.

Is your rig auto or manual?

If it is auto then you will want the 5.13's manual you will be fine with 4.88's.

5.13's in a D30 make for a really small pinion gear so that becomes your weak point if you lock and upgrade your axle shafts.

Personally we wouldn't lock the D30 just gear it and save the money you saved on the locker for a ProRock 44 or something even better.

Same 30/44 JKU auto setup.... just put in 4.88s and I'm perfectly happy with them. Sure, some hill climbs suck, but I'm glad I have better low end.

You can get an Aussie for under $300. That will hardly put a dent in savings for a PR44.

Second that... it's spot on advice. That last sentence really makes sense. I wish I'd waited instead of locking up my D30 and spent the money on a PR44. In fact, DON'T lock OR regear until you have that PR44, because you'll spend labor $$ on the regear that the shop usually will do the locker for little or no extra money. So that money would be spent (on your regear) anyway. If that PR44 is anywhere on the horizon for you, save up for it first and THEN regear and lock up. Just my 2 cents... from someone with the same setup and budget issues.

4.88s is crap. 513s at a minimum.
