Jeep with new DIESEL engine
I was watching the Detroit International Auto Show this weekend on the tube. They were showing the new Jeep Grand Cherokee that is going to be offered with a 6 cyl diesel engine. Anyone have any info on this new engine. Sounds like an awesome contender for an engine swap or maybe the next step in powertrain offered as an option on upcoming Wrangler models. Purely speculation of course....
"This morning at the Detroit Auto Show, the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel will be unveiled by Jeep as part of a comprehensive update to the three-year-old sport utility vehicle.
Fitted to European versions of the Grand Cherokee already, the 240-horsepower 3.0-liter V-6turbodiesel produces a substantial 420 lb-ft of torque.
Jeep predicts the diesel Grand Cherokee will be rated at 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway for the rear-wheel drive version; we're betting that produces a combined EPA rating of 24 or 25 mpg.
Adding all-wheel drive will bring that down to 20 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, Jeep says, which we'd peg at 22 or 23 mpg combined.
According to the company, that fuel efficiency will offer a highway range of more than 700 miles--meaning you'll have to stop for bodily needs well before you need to refuel. "

Funny, here in Germany most people are buying the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee with the Diesel.
I am looking forward to import a Rubicon from USA because you can't get a Rubicon with the 3.6l in Germany, only as a Diesel. If you want a JK with the 3.6 you have to buy a Sahara.
The Grand Cherokee with the 3.0l Diesel is the standard engine here...it drives nice and is quiet for a Diesel. But I would never buy the Diesel in case there is also a Hemi or at least the 3.6 available. Sure, the Diesel has some torque advantages while offroading, but also a really bad sound, is not so comfortable and has higher maintenance costs (service, tax), too.
The reason why most people in Germany drive Diesel engines are the lower fuel costs. Don't like Diesels at all :-)

IMO, a diesel engine in a Jeep Wrangler is only about 10-20 years late from an enthusiast perspective. I won't claim to know anything about the EPA battles behind getting it under the hood of Jeeps for sale in the US.
420ft/lb torque...that's about what the LS3 V8 in the current generation Camaro SS puts out. That's a lot of twist! And it will be in a very usable RPM-range.
While it would take quite a few miles to realize the savings of buying a new diesel Jeep over my gas 3.6, it would be worth it just for the fun of having that much torque in a Jeep.
