Is it safe? Are there any better intakes on the market... Overall thoughts?

We wouldn't recommend wheeling with any thing other than the factory air box or a snorkel. The actual power gain from an intake system is so minimal compared to the risk of wheeling with an intake that could allow water to be ingested.

You will for sure have to worry about water. You can buy a "sock" pre filter if you are in dust areas that have a tighter weave. I use the sock over my ATV intake.

I just took mine off and re-installed the OEM air box. Was hoping to find some water crossings and not willing to chance the dreaded hydro-lock. If you never see water the AfE is great - gave me a little over 1 mpg (measured and calculated - not off the computer) and felt quicker and I'm out in the desert so it worked for me for the last 3 years.
