Gear break in?
I'm installing my prorock 44 tomorrow and it came from NORTHRIDGE4x4 with the Detroit locker and 513's installed. But I'm wondering, if the break in is 500 miles for new gears in the rear end, how about the new front end? Do I just street drive it for 500 and then kick it in 4lo and have at it? Or do I need to baby it for a while in 4wd
Nope, just the usual 500 mile break in will suffice. Even though your not in 4wd, the front ring & pinion is still spinning. Just follow the recommended break in procedure which are:
-No full throttle/quick acceleration.
-No towing
-No hard offroading
-No prolong excessive speeds for long distance driving. Keep it under 65.
-Etc...

Here's our procedure-
• BREAK-IN - Ring and pinion sets require a brief break-in period in order to ensure long life and quiet operation. The following procedure is required to maintain any and all warranties that apply:
1. Bring the axle to normal operating temperature by driving the vehicle unloaded for approximately 20 miles. Do not accelerate hard or create unnecessary shock loads.
2. Let the axle cool completely.
3. Operate the vehicle normally for the next 200 miles. Do not haul heavy loads or tow heavy trailer during this period.
4. For towing usage, operate the vehicle with the trailer for about 20 miles, and let the axle cool completely.
5. Avoid constant heavy towing until a total of 500 miles has been driven on the new axle.
CAUTION: Following these break-in procedures can extend the life of your ring and pinion.
Enjoy your new axle!!!!
