This is one of those 'can you' vs 'should you' questions.

Can you pull 500lbs over the limit? Of course.
Can you do it safely? Probably.
Can you do it without damage? Again, probably.
Can you do it legally? Give your insurance agent a call. My guess, they don't want to pay if they can find a way out. And you just gave it to them.

That's actually a great answer.

If it is 4k with all of youre gear 100% loaded and ready to go yes, if that is empty weight I would say no gear adds up quick. My aluminum popup weighs 1100lbs. empty with all of our gear, tools, food, all the stuff you need for a month long trip, my Jeep and trailer scaled out at 7400lbs. mountain grades on interstates knocked me down to 45mph. also depends on how much frontal area you have wind drag has a huge effect that will be magnified if you are way overweight.

what he said ^^^^^ about frontal area.

For the JK it is ALL about frontal area. Frontal area of the trailer + the frontal area of the JK.

Pulling a 4,000lbs boat is easier than pulling the largest (empty) u-haul trailer down the road. (not including steep grades and starting/stopping)

If you have 2 axles in the back it will lessen the Lip load. You should be able to do it. I would not go into any mountain regions with it Brakes will overheat and can you say "Run away JK?" But if it mainly flat and a sea level you should be ok.

Lets strap a 125 pound pack on your back when your are comfortable with 100 lbs. Its going to cause unnecessary stress on you but you will survive. But check your insurance before you do.

If you are going to pull anything up to the row limit I would suggest installing a trailer brake booster. Pulling is one thing stopping is different problem altogether.
