Default fuel mileage vs off road gear

hey, i'm new to the whole jeep thing, so i had a question. i have an 08 JKU and i was gonna go with steel bumpers front and back and some rock sliders but i wondered how this effects the gas mileage? anybody care to share what they see with their rig? i already bought a rear bumper but now i'm starting to rethink my customizing plans. i don't really go off road much and probably would be more drawn towards more milder trails, so i guess these things would be more asthetic. thanx for any info... -steve

As anything the amount of weight you add will effect your economy. My 08 JKU is about 7500 full of gas. Body armor and parts make a difference. Needless to say I get 15 on the hwy and about 10 in town. Could other parts helped Iam sure it would of. Make it how u want maybe you can break the mold.

Tire size and gearing plays a big role too...I assume with light trails you won't need to re-gear but with new bumpers front and back and rocker rails and 35's I'm in the same range of 10-15 mpg

Thanx, this is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. Might have to sell or trade that rear bumper...

7500? Pounds? Almost sounds like a typo.

Anyway, here is how it went with my '11 2dr -

Stock, with air, automatic, hard top, and 24s package it weighed about 3900 and got 23 - 25 MPG at a steady 60 MPH.

Added a steel front bumper, winch, and steel skid. Added Brawler rock rails. Added a high-lift jack, compressor, two bags of tools, a pull-pal, an ARB fridge, and a bin of emergency gear. Raised the Jeep 2.5" with a spring lift, and changed from SRA street tires to mud-tread tires of the same size.

With those mods the Jeep weighs 4450 with half a tank of gas and nobody in the seats. It gets 20 MPG at a steady 60 MPH when I'm lucky.

I agree with you this things are porkly. Jeep states 4400lbs empty. Throw on an extra 400-500 pounds of tires 500-600 lbs of bumpers and skids 200 lbs of gas etc adds up quick
