Default Driveline noise goes away in 4wd?

So I'm chasing this intermittent noise in my new JK with 2750 miles on it. Kind of a tapping noise. It's fairly quiet, but it seems to increase with RPM's, ONLY happens on acceleration, I can feel it through my shifter (manual), and it disappears when I put it in 4hi. I have checked the front driveshaft and its good. I'm fearing its a transfer case issue and I'm fairly modded already. Any thoughts? I was gonna pull the front driveshaft, but the noise is intermittent. I have a bad feeling about this one.

Put both front and rear axles up on jack stands with the tranny in neutral.

Then crawl under there and spin the tires, driveshaft, etc., looking and listening for the source of the problem.

If you had an automatic, I'd tell you to check for a ripped front driveshaft boot.

You may have simply lost a front axle shaft u-joint cap.
